ReplyI think this is a fitting tribute to Mr. McKenna. I also recall him as a long time supporter/contributor to Seekonk Save A Pet - I learned of his passing only by the description of hand-tied fishing flies and waders donated in his memory by his family at this year's fundraiser. It was my honor to win those donations and I will pass on the gear to the younger generation to honor his love of fishing and boating.

ReplyI would have liked to hear how they expanded from milk to ice cream - on a tour a long time ago, the guide told us that there used to be a peach orchard nearby and they decided to make peach ice cream to use up the peaches. That was their first and only flavor, only available during the peach season. I think that is a very interesting part of their history. Can anyone elaborate?

Did you miss the whole issue about the fact that there is no way for the parents to get an accounting or a balance of their children's accounts from the system they are forced to use? I do not blame the parents in this case.
On the other hand, I will say that when my child was in middle school in another town, there was an informal fund of money in the office from which kids who forgot their day's lunch money could borrow for the day and then repay the next day. There were several kids who were wise to the system and always borrowed and never repaid. I think their parents had to be notified of their kid's behavior because the fund was depleted by their irresponsible actions. I think the parents were told that the child never had money for lunch and to please remedy the situation, because the student would have no lunch from then on if no money. That was an extreme case of the kid either having the money and not spending it, or being irresponsible in forgetting all the time.

ReplyI am so sorry about the loss of Ellie Mae to diseases that are preventable.
I would like to make a comment to potential pet adopters - veterinary care even for healthy pets is expensive! Between office visit charges, monthly heartworm and flea/tick prevention, annual heartworm testing, and vaccines for Lyme, kennel cough, etc. it really adds up to keep a dog healthy. I just paid $400 this week for preventive care and supplies for 2 healthy dogs that I rescued. A heartworm test is $50, annual Lyme disease vaccine $35, monthly heartworm pill $6, monthly flea/tick guard $15 per dog. That's not including food and grooming.
As much as people want to provide a home for a pet, they must assess their finances to see if they can really afford it on a monthly basis. Providing a loving home, with food and water, is not sufficient - dogs need medical care and it adds up on a monthly basis. If the dog is ill, injured or has allergies, costs add up even higher.
I do not regret for one second that I rescued my beautiful loving dogs, but I honestly did not anticipate their expenses that go up every year.

I agree - if something is that important, please pull over and take care of it - call or text. Distracted driving is so dangerous to the other drivers and pedestrians, and to the driver themselves. I saw a woman driving a big SUV, backing up with one hand while holding the phone in the other, talking away in a tight and busy parking lot. It was a miracle she didn't hurt someone. It only takes a second to make a mistake that will change your life forever. There'll be no texting in jail and prison.
