ReplyThis article reminds me of all the work the group Reusable Resources did starting in the 1970's to promote and recycle literally tons of newspaper the first Saturday of the month at the Y parking lot, the Coelho School parking lot and another site in North Attleboro that I can't remember. Reusable Resources was ahead of its time! :)

ReplyEveryone should drop by the delightful Ugly Dog Book Store! Attleboro is lucky to have such a unique store for both its merchandice and Kim's generosity to our community charities. I loved every nook of this very special store!

ReplyI was at Brennan with my class of 5th graders. Several worried parents came in and took their children out of school. I did not tell the kids what was happening. We did not discuss what at happened until the next day. I did not show any photos or video, most of the class had seen it at home. Luckily for the kids this was an unreal rather abstract event, only a few of them recognized the enormity of the horror of what had happened 3 hours away. I answered questions about the event for weeks after, mostly dealing with the children's safety. Many people criticized the school for not showing the event to the older students as it happened. For me, it was better to gather facts the night of the event and have real information to share with the class the next day. Since the event I have included the events of 9-11 as part of my social studies curriculum.

On the article Attleboro Elementary School Student Supplies List

ReplyRemember students who are unable to supply their own supplies need only to ask the teacher for whatever they need. The school has limited amounts of supplies which can be accessed and then it's left to the teacher to provide materials for these students.
Except for kleenex, the articles listed are not to be shared with all. During the cold season, my class would use 3-4 boxes of kleenex a month and of course the kid with the worst cold or allegies wouldn't contribute to the class supply. The school has a limited supply so teachers are typically bringing in 2- 3 cases of kleenex.
A student will use more than 24 pencils during the year. I would have about 300, bought at Staples on hand in Septemeber and by May I would have none.
One way students use their dry erase markers is in math review. Solving problems on the erase board and holding up their answers is a quick way for the teacher to see who is having trouble. Again the school has a limited supply, teachers buy the markers for the kids who don't have them.
I could list a huge number of germy places in school that children are touching everyday. The hand sanitizer is kept in students' lockers or desks to be used by individual student. Some generous parents send in large containers which are placed by the sink and the kleenex for all students.
On average, teachers spend between $500- $800 per year on student materials.
Please help support your teacher by supporting your child. -
