The William Bergevine Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to an Attleboro resident who has shown leadership and a commitment to community service.
Dancing, dinner and remembrance were on tap last weekend during an event at the Attleboro Elks Lodge to raise money for the William Bergevine Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was established earlier this year to support local high school students who have demonstrated leadership while being active community members. It is named in memory of William Bergevine, who died last year and had served as a city councilor and school committee member. "My father loved his community, and it was a source of great pride that he was a third-generation Attleboro resident," Bergevine's daughter Jennifer wrote in an email to Attleboro Patch. "He believed that it was a civic responsibility to give back to the community, which is what prompted him to …

Duff White, Kimberly Allard and Cherie Felos were honored for their service during their final city council meeting Tuesday night. William Bergevine was also remembered.
Three outgoing Attleboro City Councilors were recognized for their service Tuesday night during their final meeting. Kimberly Allard, Cherie Felos and Duff White were honored by President Frank Cook and Vice President Walter Thibodeau with a presentation of a plaque and the opportunity to speak. "This is always one of those nights that is both happy and sad," Cook said. "We’re sad to see people go but we’re happy that they served." Allard, who is Attleboro's longest standing city councilor after serving 10 years, thanked her family and friends, particularly her sister, Bonnie. She also thanked her fellow councilors, including William Bergevine, who died suddenly earlier this month. "I’ve served with some great people," she said. "I was …

To the Editor: Good friendships don’t come often. I have been lucky in my life to have had several close friends over the years. Bill Bergevine was one of those friends. I held Bill in very high esteem. I first respected and admired him as a dedicated School Committee member, then as a member of the Planning Board, and finally as a colleague on the City Council. It is during that time on the Council that I really got to know him as a man. He was meticulous and methodical in his approach to city government. He was the perfect public servant, always working hard to find solutions to problems that Attleboro faced. He considered every decision carefully and always worried about how it would affect the lives of the people he served. No one …

A man with a twinkle in his eye, someone who loved children, someone who you could always rely on. Those are just some ways William R. Bergevine was described by his fellow councilors during a memorial service in his honor at Attleboro City Council Chambers Tuesday night.

A special ceremony in memory of William Bergevine is planned for Tuesday night.
Black and purple mourning bunting hung in front of Attleboro City Hall and flags were at half mast Monday in mourning of Attleboro City Councilor William "Bill" Bergevine, 62, who died suddenly at his home Saturday night from a heart attack. City Councilors will gather at their regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday night at 7 p.m. as if there was a regular meeting. The meeting will begin with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence for Bergevine. Each chairperson will then cancel their meeting …

Friends and family are coping with the sudden death of William Bergevine.
Lifelong resident and Attleboro Ward 4 City Councilor William Bergevine has died. News of his death from a sudden heart attack Saturday night has shocked friends and colleagues. The Councilor was due to attend his last city council meeting on December 20 where he, and other outgoing councilors, would be recognized for their contribution to the City of Attleboro. Mayor Kevin Dumas said he was devastated by the news of Bergevine's passing. "Bill gave so much of his time in order to help people," Dumas said. "He will forever be missed by me and many." "I was stunned when I got the call that Bill had passed away," Attleboro City Council President Frank Cook said. "I remember thinking I must be dreaming this can't be real. "My heart goes out to…
