Free Magic Show Coming to Attleboro

Family friendly Magicians Mike Bent and Bob Riordan will perform this Sunday at Attleboro High School. Shows will take place at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

It will be a magical Sunday at Attleboro High School when the United Regional Chamber of Commerce takes over to present two free magic shows targeted toward children, but that the whole family can enjoy. The shows will feature magicians Mike Bent and Bob Riordan, who have both been performing for more than 20 years. The two magicians are nationally known, with Bent having performed alongside the cast of "Glee" and Justin Bieber among others for many years. Riordan has performed at various well-known places throughout New England. The shows will be interactive. Performances will take place at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. No tickets are required. Attleboro High is located at 100 Rathbun Willard Drive.

Chamber of Commerce to Host Economic Summit

The free event is open to business owners, human resource managers and anyone interested in getting grants and funding to expand their business and/or train their workforce.

The United Regional Chamber of Commerce, which represents businesses in Attleboro and nearby communities, is sponsoring an economic summit this Tuesday at Bristol Community College. The event will include presentations by various speakers about opportunities for grant funding for workforce development and business expansion.  Among those expected to make presentations are representatives from: "The event is free and open to business owners, human resource managers and anyone interested in getting grants and funding to expand their business and/or train their workforce, in the area," wrote Jack Lank, chamber president. Those who are interested in attending the event should register by contacting the chamber at 508-222-0801.

Chamber Names Person, Business of the Year

The recipients will be honored at a banquet next month.

The United Regional Chamber of Commerce, which has a membership that includes businesses in Attleboro and Seekonk, announced Monday the recipients of the person and business of the year awards. The winners are Ed Hurley, president of the Hockomock Area YMCA, and Cryan Landscape Contractors. A chamber press release states, "Under Hurley's leadership, the Hockomock YCMA serves every segment of the population, from preschoolers to senior citizens." State Rep. Betty Poirier nominated Hurley for the award. "At the heart of all of these programs is Ed Hurley," said Poirier, according to the chamber's release. Senator Brown to Speak at United Chamber of Commerce Luncheon

The United Regional Chamber of Commerce to host Senator Scott Brown in a special luncheon April 3.

Council Reduces Business Tax Burden, Increases Residential Tax [VIDEO]

Attleboro City Council voted in favor of 1.425 tax rate split which would bring the split between residential and business tax rates closer.

Hours of conversation over bringing the tax rate split between business and residents closer together resulted in the Attleboro City Council's vote in favor to set the tax rate split at 1.425, which means higher taxes for residents. The decision came after the council held a public hearing to hear opinions from local residents and business owners Tuesday night. A total of six councilors voted against a 1.45 rate, but voted in favor of a 1.425 split tax rate, which means a $105 tax increase for Attleboro homes with average values and a $782 increase for businesses of average value.  Attleboro City Assessor Stan Nacewicz had proposed a 1.40 rate, but Budget and Appropriations Committee Chairman pushed for the 1.425 rate. Attleboro Resident Makes Connections, Moves Photo Business to the 'Boro

Andrew Heller has moved his photo business from Walpole to new digs on Riverbank Road in Attleboro.

Longtime resident and entrepreneur Andy Heller knows a thing about lighting, photo lenses and snapping a photo from the right angle. More importantly, however, he knows how to capture the moment and seek opportunity, especially when it's right in front of him. After more than a decade of snapping photos in Walpole, Heller closed the door to his Walpole-based studio to open Heller Photography, a studio closer to home in Attleboro. How it happened was unexpected. For more than a year Heller was looking for the perfect studio space in Attleboro, but came up short. Chamber Recognizes Attleboro's Best

Three Attleboro residents and one business were awarded with Persons and Business of the Year.

Attleboro City Councilor Richard Conti and Attleboro volunteers Heather and Eddie Porreca were awarded and recognized for their contributions to their community at the United Regional Chamber of Commerce's 95th Person of the Year ceremony Thursday night. The trio were presented with awards by Chamber President Jack Lank during a ceremony held at the Lake View Pavilion in Foxborough for their efforts in revitalizing the Attleboro Farmers Market. The Chamber's Business of the Year award went to an Attleboro company, E.A. Dion Company. The company is a full-service jewelry manufacturing company started in Attleboro 43 years ago by Edward Dion.
