The session will include a review of information obtained through recent focus groups.

The Attleboro School Committee will host a special meeting this Thursday at 8 p.m. to update the public on information obtained through various focus groups on the superintendent search. The meeting will take place at Attleboro High School . The session will not be happening without controversy, as it was revealed Monday night that not everybody on the committee was pleased with the process. Attleboro School District Seeks Input on Superintendent Search

Focus groups will take place on the school campuses as well as other locations.

The Attleboro school district has invited the public to attend focus group sessions regarding the search for a superintendent. Current Superintendent Pia Durkin is expected to step down at the end of June. Families should attend the focus group session at their child's school. All sessions will take place in the school library and are expected to take one hour. There are also three sessions scheduled for the general public that will take place next month. "Questionnaires to be used to initiate conversations will be available in each principal's office by Monday, Oct. 22," a release from the school district states. "In addition, on the week of Oct. 22, the Family & Community Survey will be disseminated to all students of the Attleboro …

School Committee Approves Plan for Superintendent Search

A new school district head is expected to be in place by July 1.

Attleboro School Committee members Mike Tyler, David Murphy and Ken Parent made a presentation at the Monday meeting on a four-phase search process for the hiring of a district superintendent. The plan was approved by a 6-0 vote. Superintendent Pia Durkin, who is in her seventh year at the helm, has publicly stated she expects to leave at the end of June. While supporters say she has raised academic achievement in the district, she also has dissenters who look to recent staff turnover and other problems they say exist. Durkin has also butted heads with some school committee members, especially with the two who were not there for the meeting, Brenda Furtado and Teri Enegren. In addition, Barbara Craw was at the meeting, but left before the …

SOUND OFF: Finding a New Superintendent

What kind of a people do you want running the school districts in Attleboro and Seekonk?

Tonight's Attleboro School Committee agenda states Chair Mike Tyler will make a "Superintendent Search Process Presentation." Based on Superintendent Pia Durkin's comments a few months ago to The Sun Chronicle and the item on tonight's agenda, it appears Attleboro will have a new school district head in the 2013-14 school year. In Seekonk, the district is collecting applications for the superintendent post. With one district already searching for a superintendent and the other probably beginning the proccess soon, Patch asks, "What are you looking for in a superintendent?" Post your thoughts in the comments section below.

School Committee Renews Interim Superintendent's Contract

Arlene Bosco receives a base salary of $106,761 for the period covering Sept. 17 to June 30.

Seekonk's interim superintendent will take a salary cut under the conditions of her contract renewal approved by the school committee on Monday. However, Arlene Bosco will also have less work to do because she will no longer have the additional job as director of pupil personnel services. Bosco was named interim superintendent on May 21, three days after Madeline Meyer abruptly resigned as head of the district. The initial version of the contract called for Bosco to receive $73,825 for the period covering May 21 through Sept. 30. This is a daily rate of $777 ($259 as director of pupil personnel services and $518 as superintendent). Under the terms of the contract renewal, she will only receive the superintendent salary for a total of $106…

The Seekonk district expects to make an appointment in March, with the person starting work July 1.

Job seekers can apply for the position as superintendent of the Seekonk school district beginning today. The district will accept applications through Nov. 1. According to the job posting, which appears on the district's website and will be included in various online and print media, the district will make an appointment in March and the person will begin working July 1. The person must have at least a master's degree and five years of administrative and/or central office experience. A salary is not mentioned in the posting. An attached brochure says the appointee would …

Superintendent Job Posting Expected to Be Published in Sept.

The town should have a new schools chief in January, the school committee chair says.

Seekonk's school district superintendent search steering committee has met a few times this summer and is expected to meet again soon, Mitch Vieira, chair of the school committee told Seekonk Patch earlier this week. A notice for the job is expected to be posted in various print and online sources next month. The community will be involved in the process, with focus groups and open house sessions taking place in the fall, Vieira said. The district should have a new superintendent in January, he said. Former Superintendent Madeline Meyer abruptly quit in May, despite having been given a three-year contract extension in March. No official reason was stated for her decision to leave. Various sources familiar with the situation say the …

Public Could Get More Info on Superintendent's Future

The minutes of the school committee's executive session from early May could reveal what was said when Superintendent Pia Durkin's contract was up for discussion.

Attleboro residents could receive more insight into what exactly happened during a recent executive session discussion on the employment of Superintendent Pia Durkin. The committee will meet in executive session, which takes place behind closed doors, on Thursday to discuss the possible release of minutes from executive session meetings dating back to January. What is of interest to many school district observers are the records from an executive session that took place in early May. School Committee Vice Chair Brenda Furtado disappointed, upset or shocked (depending on one's viewpoint) many people when she announced toward the end of last week's regular meeting that the majority of the committee had voted at the executive session in early…
