Update: Attleboro Student Paints Award-Winning Holocaust Scene

St. John the Evangelist Student Caroline Fortin moved by story of Anne Frank.

Caroline Fortin, an eighth grade student at St. John the Evangelist School in Attleboro, won first place award for the 2011 Holocaust Education and Resource Center of Rhode Island annual art and writing contest. "I enjoy art and drawing, so I decided to participate in the contest because I thought it would be a fun experience," Fortin said. "After learning about the Holocaust during literature and taking on the part of Anne Frank in a play, I knew what the victims went through, so it felt more meaningful to paint the picture." "We received over 200 entries from middle and high schools this year," said Center Director, May-Ronny Zeidman. "Caroline was one of several students who will receive an award." All entries are read and judged by a …

The Stir

Humble Pumpkin Pie

Twenty pies for a good cause.

With the help of generous people, who donated 20 cans of pumpkin, I was able to make 20 pumpkin pies for the Thanksgiving Food Drive at St. John the Evangelist Church. I believe it is of the utmost importance that people give back during the holidays. It would be ideal if this type of giving was emphasized year round and most people do what they can showing a little goes a long way. People in need are so grateful that others want to give, whether it is their time or money, to help keep tradition going for many that just can't afford to put a big meal together. Thanksgiving gives us an opportunity to share in a special day that should humble us and remind us how fortunate we are for what we have. The Humble Pumpkin Pie: What I like about …

City Workers, Local Organizations Prepare for Holiday Season

Parks & Forestry employees will spend the next few days decorating the streets of Attleboro for the holidays while organizations pray and feed the hungry.

It is a tough job, but someone has to do it. Attleboro Parks and Forestry workers braved the cold on Monday morning to decorate the downtown area for the holiday season.  With nearly 60 light poles to decorate with greens and bows, city workers say they have their work cut out for them in the next few days.  Henry Bourgette, an employee of the city for nearly 30 years, said the holiday feeling is in the air as soon as the greens to decorate the city come out. "It's a lot of work," Bourgette said. "It takes three to four days to decorate, it all depends on how many guys we have and who is in." Bourgette prefers holding the greens and wrapping the poles while Eddie Pina, who sits in a bucket, directs from the air.  "How we lookin' Ed," …

Students Score with Revs Goalkeeper

Matt Reis, New England Revolution Goalkeeper, holds clinic for Attleboro youth kids

Twelve kids had the opportunity of a lifetime. It was a night to remember for St. John the Evangelist School students who won the opportunity to meet and receive soccer instruction and pointers from Matt Reis, starting goalkeeper for the New England Revolution and member of the US soccer team.  The students were able to meet Reis and participate in the clinic because they had the winning bid during a recent auction held by St. John the Evangelist School. The night started with all of the kids excited to meet Reis. The Revs keeper began with a dribbling drill. He taught the kids several methods of cutting the ball and turning with the ball. Reis was very dedicated to the kids and wanted to make the experience personal to each student. His …

Ben, Thanks for writing up a great article on the soccer clinic with Matt Reis. And thank you also for the story on the U12B Attleboro Revolution soccer championship win, the previous week. It was a pleasure for me to assistant coach the team with Mike Ferreira and Joe Hasenfus, and I'm happy the kids' hard work brought them a win. The work that you do in reporting on the local youth sports is …   more ›
