With what the National Weather Service is calling "a potential historic winter storm" expected to strike Attleboro Friday and Saturday, Mayor Kevin Dumas is urging residents to stay home. He has declared a "citywide snow emergency" for Attleboro that will go into effect Friday at 7 a.m. and last until further notice. As much as two feet of snow could fall on Attleboro from Friday morning through Saturday afternoon, the NWS' forecast says. A blizzard warning has been issued for the city, as well the rest of Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Up to two feet of snow could fall in Attleboro.
5 p.m. UPDATE The National Weather Service canceled the Winter Storm Watch and issued a Blizzard Watch for Attleboro as well as much of Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island that will be in effect from Friday morning to Saturday afternoon. Up to two feet of snow is expected in what the National Weather Service is calling "a potential historic winter storm and blizzard." "A Blizzard Watch means there is a potential for considerable falling and/or blowing snow with sustained winds or frequent gusts over 35 mph and visibilities below 1/4 mile for at least three hours," the National Weather Service's website states. A second storm is headed to the area and could make driving hazardous on Saturday.
A second storm of the week is headed toward New England and will dump more snow onto the area on Saturday. 7News meteorologists are predicting the area around Attleboro and Seekonk to get between 4 to 6 inches of snow in the storm that is expected to start on Saturday afternoon and spread into the early hours of Sunday. The good news is that snow removal shouldn’t be a backbreaking endeavour. CBSBoston’s Todd Gutner said the snow will be “dry and fluffy for most,” though he warned that driving could be hazardous at times on Saturday.

At least one Massachusetts person has died so far in the storm.
Thousands of Attleboro residents were in the dark Sunday morning after a winter storm swept through the region. According to National Grid's Outage Central, wide-scale outages have been reported in parts of the city. As of 6 a.m. Sunday, approximately 1,300 customers were without power in an area stretching from downtown to Briggs Corner. Close to another 1000 are reportedly without power between the area of S. Main Street and County Street/South Avenue. Several other areas also reported scattered outages. Since then, power has returned for many people.
