A state audit finds 119 Level 2 and 3 sex offenders are living at addresses registered as child care providers. Also, background checks are not being done in some cases.
A new report from State Auditor Suzanne Bump suggests a surprisingly large number of sex offenders statewide may be living in properties also used as childcare facilities. According to the report, the recent audit found 119 Level 2 and 3 sex offenders living at addresses that were also registered with the state as child care providers. The audit covered July 2010 through September 2011. "While we recognize that all 119 may not pose a problem because some of the information in the sex offender registry may be outdated, we believe that routinely conducting this match will serve to better ensure the safety of children in (Department of Early Education and Care's) programs," the report states. State Rep. Paul Heroux hosts a panel discussion on youth safety.
Gun violence, bullying and mental health were among the topics of a panel discussion Wednesday night hosted by Attleboro state Rep. Paul Heroux at the United Way of Greater Attleboro. These topics were part of a general focus on school mass shootings Heroux, who has a master's degree in criminology and worked for the Massachusetts Department of Correction, said the U.S. Secret Service tried to create a profile to identify school mass shooters, but was unable to do it. As reported last week, state Rep. Paul Heroux will host a program tonight on youth safety at the United Way of Greater Attleboro, which is located at 247 Maple St. in Attleboro. Heroux issued the following information this week on the program's format: Part 1 - Heroux will talk about the legislation he filed as it applies to keeping kids safe from sex offenders and bullies (within part one, any district elected official that would like to speak will be given a moment to do so). Attleboro's new state representative will host a forum next week on Wednesday on how to keep children safe from guns, sex offenders and bullies. A Wakefield man and tutor who faces numerous child sex charges was a Level 1 sex offender.
On Thursday afternoon, news spread quickly through the region about the indictment of a Wakefield couple for numerous charges stemming from an illegal day care operation where graphic child sexual abuse occurred. The Middlesex County District Attorney's office alleges that at least 13 children were abused while under the care of John Burbine, 49, at the Waterfall Education Center, which offered tutoring and day care. Burbine was a level 1 sex offender, which means he had been convicted of a sex-related crime but was deemed least likely to re-offend. Level 2 and 3 sex offenders would be banned from city-owned property.
The Attleboro Committee on Ordinances, Elections and Legislative Matters voted in favor during a committee meeting Tuesday night to move a proposed Child Safety ordinance out of committee and to hold a public hearing. The Child Safety Ordinance would ban Level 2 and Level 3 sex offenders from entering city-owned buildings or be on city-owned property that is considered a Child Safety Zone. I hope the Comm of MA is going to do something with this information - like investigate the licensees to see if the sex offender is living at that address now. Is there any money in the budget to conduct such an investigation or the report just cause some outrage and fade away... more ›
