Man with Umbrella Detained in Search for Seekonk Gunman

The man did not match the description of the reported gunman.

The Seekonk Police Department released information on Monday about the report from Sunday of a gunman on Highland Avenue. The following press release was edited by Seekonk Patch: On Sunday at about 3:50 p.m., the Seekonk Police Department received a call reporting a man was seen carrying a rifle in the area of Stop & Shop on Highland Avenue. The man was reportedly seen walking westerly through the parking lot of the store. Since the call came in near the change of shift, two shifts of Seekonk officers, along with Massachusetts State Police and East Providence, R.I. officers responded to the area. If there was or wasn't a psycho with a gun in the parking lot, or in the store, he is the bad guy, he is the one putting people in harms way. Seekonk Stores Evacuated Due to Report of Gunman

No man is found.

Several stores along Route 6 in Seekonk were evacuated Sunday afternoon after police received a report at about 4 p.m. that a man was was carrying a rifle through a parking lot toward Home Depot, according to the Providence Journal. The newspaper reported: The police first evacuated Home Depot and Stop & Shop and then moved on to Michaels, Petco, Golf Town and Bed, Bath & Beyond, said Lt. David Dyson. Each closing lasted about 5 to 10 minutes. "We were unable to locate him," Dyson said. Dyson also said, according to the newspaper, that police checked with two local stores that sell guns, and none reported the sale of a rifle.

Reported Violent Crimes Up in Attleboro, Down in Seekonk

The FBI's annual crime report shows an increase from 2010 to 2011 in reported violent crimes in Attleboro.

More violent crimes were reported in Attleboro in 2011 than were reported in 2010, according to statistics released this week by the FBI. The number reported last year was 168, while 152 were reported in 2010. In Seekonk, the number was down from 35 in 2010 to 26 in 2011. The FBI's annual Uniform Crime Report includes information submitted by local law enforcement agencies. The information is compiled and released to the public in the fall of the year that follows the reported year.  Violent crimes include murder and non-negligent manslaughter (willful, non-negligent killing of one human being by another, according to the FBI's website), forcible rape (including attempts and "assaults to commit rape"), robbery and aggravated assault. Bank Robbery Suspect's Photo Released

The man is a suspect in reported robberies in Seekonk and Somerset.

Seekonk police on Monday released the photo of a man they said robbed Citizens Bank Friday morning. The bank is located in Stop & Shop at 125 Highland Ave. in Seekonk. The unidentified man is also a suspect in a robbery reported later that day in Somerset. Police described the suspect as being a white male in his 30s or 40s, approximately 5 feet, 7 inches tall, with a thin build and light beard.  "He was wearing a camouflage long-sleeve shirt, blue jeans, thick-rimmed eye glasses and a Virginia Tech 'Hokies' baseball cap along with a brown wig," a press release from the police states. Seekonk Shoplifters May Have Struck in R.I.

The police departments in Seekonk and Conventry are searching for a group of suspects believed to be behind Walmart thefts in both towns.

A group of people who stole items from the Walmart in Seekonk may have also committed the same crime in Coventry, R.I., according to a report from WPRI in Providence. The TV's channel's news department reports: Officers in Seekonk report that the group stole high-end electronics and Dyson vacuum cleaners from the Walmart store ... on Sunday, May 27. Coventry police believe the same group targeted the Walmart in their town ... on Wednesday, May 23. The suspects were seen leaving both scenes in the same gold or tan-colored station wagon. All of the suspects appear to be white, and the younger of the group has a left forearm tattoo. Those who have information on the crime should contact the Seekonk police at 508-336-7027 ex. 3.

Seekonk Police Log: Warrant, Suspended Driving

The Seekonk Police Department reports the following recent arrests: Jennifer Lynn Barney, 26, of Seekonk was arrested March 21 on an unspecified warrant at her home. Eric Christopher Dolan, 34, of New Bedford was arrested and charged March 23 with operating a vehicle with a suspended license. He was also cited for allegedly failing to yield his vehicle at the intersection of County and Luther streets.

The Seekonk Police Department reports the following recent arrests: Derick M. Cardin, 21, of Pawtucket was arrested and charged March 17 with driving under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, a lane violation and illegal possession of a Class E substance. The arrest occurred after police stopped Cardin's vehicle at the corner of Pine and Fairfield streets at about 2:40 a.m. Nathanyle Pine, 19, of North Dighton was arrested and charged March 18 with operating under the influence of liquor and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. The arrest occurred after Pine's vehicle was stopped near the Seekonk YMCA on Taunton Avenue at about 1:42 a.m.
