The BBB is warning the public of Memorial Day-related scams.
Since January 1, the Attleboro Police Department has responded to 37 reports of fraud. In 2010, the department received 156 reports of fraudulent incidents. While many of the incidents targeted senior citizens, the Memorial Day holiday gives scammers a specific group on which to prey – military families. With Memorial Day quickly approaching, the Better Business Bureau of Boston wants residents to be on high alert for scammers who will use the military holiday to scam servicemen, women and their families. Residents are receiving calls for solictiation from organizations that are actually scammers.
Police are investigating reports of fraudulent behavior involving solicitation for donations from the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). The investigation comes after a resident reported she was the victim of check fraud after leaving a check taped to her door for what she thought was the local VFW but was actually someone committing fraud. The check was altered and cashed by Jason Angell, 30,who was not with the VFW. Angell was later arrested by the Attleboro Police and charged with multiple crimes in connection with multiple victims of the VFW solicitation scam.
