Seekonk School District Wants $127K for Security

The funding would be for the first phase of a three-phase plan to make the schools safer.

Town Meeting on Feb. 25 will determine whether the Seekonk school district should receive $127,009 to begin a three-phase plan to improve security at the local schools. The school committee voted 4-0 Monday to support the funding. School Committee Chair Mitch Vieira said the funding would cover the first phase, which is "mainly to allow the police and fire individuals who are in the building to communicate freely and not hit any cellular drop zones or radio drop zones while they are in the building." Vieira said a private consultant did a security audit of the Seekonk schools shortly after the deadly mass shooting at Sandy Hook School in Connecticut. Emcee, I agree. But let us delineate between being non-violent and being a pacifist. One of the reasons we have this bully epidemic in society is we bringing up a generation of people that can to stand up for themselves. The last great generation that brought us through WWII understood that concept. Again maybe we should revisit our history before we move forward.   more ›

Mayor, Police & Fire Chiefs to Talk Attleboro School Safety

A presentation will take place during tonight's Attleboro School Committee meeting.

Following last month's deadly shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., safety has been a concern for many parents throughout the country. The condition of Attleboro's public schools will be a topic at tonight's school committee meeting. Mayor Kevin Dumas, along with Police Chief Kyle Heagney and Fire Chief Scott Lachance, will make a presentation during the meeting. School district Superintendent Pia Durkin said earlier this month that she has had several administrative meetings about school safety since the Connecticut shooting. Two meetings have taken place with Heagney, including one attended by Dumas. UPDATED: 27 Dead in Connecticut School Shooting

Local and state police in Newtown, Conn., were called to an elementary school at about 9:30 a.m. Friday morning after a gunman allegedly opened fire at the school.

UPDATED at 8:40 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15... NEWTOWN, CT -- Connecticut police said Friday afternoon that 26 people, including 20 children, were killed at an elementary school after a gunman opened fire. Another adult was killed at a second location.   The Scene Police in Newtown were called to the Sandy Hook School at about 9:30 a.m. after receiving a 911 call Friday morning. Authorities said the gunman was found dead inside the school. He was reportedly armed with four guns and a high-powered assault rifle. Authorities said during a press conference that they have retrieved three weapons from the scene.
