Councilor Blais Qualifies for Fall Ballot

He is seeking a seventh term as an at-large city councilor.

City Council Vice President Peter Blais became the fifth official councilor at-large candidate this week after election officials certified his papers. Blais, who chairs the council's committee on public works, is seeking a seventh term. The other at-large candidates certified for the fall election are incumbents Richard Conti, Jay DiLisio and Brian Kirby as well as challenger Heather Porreca. Three others (Bert Buckley, Ronald Churchill and Stephen Kane) have pulled papers, but not returned them as of Wednesday afternoon. The deadline to enter the election is July 30. The top five vote-getters in the at-large contest will earn seats on the council. The fall election will also include contests for the six ward representatives on the …

Porreca Qualifies for At-Large Council Race

She is the first official candidate.

Attleboro has its first official candidate in the at-large city council contest for the fall election. Attleboro Farmers Market manager Heather Porreca's nomination papers were certified Thursday, the Election's Department confirmed. "I am happy that my nomination papers have been certified and I will officially be on the ballot for city councilor at-large this fall," wrote Porreca in an email to Attleboro Patch. "I am encouraged and grateful for the support that I have received as I take the first step toward representing our community." She added, "It would be an honor to serve on the council and be a voice for the citizens as we make great strides and progress into the future. As many of you know, I am passionate about Attleboro and I …

Councilor Rips City's Handling of Storm Recovery

Jonathan Weydt says there were "so many issues" in his Ward 4. He fears a good discussion on these issues will never take place.

City Council President Frank Cook said near the beginning of the meeting Tuesday that "critique" of the city's handling of the snowstorm recovery would not be allowed, and, if needed, had to take place during a later meeting. Councilor Peter Blais believed that praise for city workers and contractors was allowed, and gave it at the end of the portion of the evening dedicated to his Committee on Public Works. "I know it was passed around today that I over-compliment, but I think in times like this, a compliment in public for those guys who worked out there is well-deserved," said Blais, who spoke about the workers giving what he called 150 percent effort. Other councilors agreed with Blais, but Jonathan Weydt was not interested in the topic…

I don't know the incident you are alluding to. But my general opinon as a member of Ward 3B is that this ward needs a new City Councilor and a new State Rep. Both Frank Cook, and especially Betty Poirier, are entrenched. New blood is needed.   more ›

Councilors Spar over Revising Attleboro Laws

Councilor Shannon Heagney wants a committee to review the city's ordinances for possible revision. Council President Frank Cook says he needs to talk to the mayor about that first.

A proposal for a City Council committee to review Attleboro's ordinances and determine if any could be removed because they are out of date or conflict with state laws turned into a 30-minute debate Tuesday night between two councilors. Councilors Shannon Heagney and Jeremy Denlea proposed that a council subcommittee review the municipal laws for possible changes. Usually when a councilor makes a proposal, Council President Frank Cook determines which committee (whether it be an existing one or a new one) should review it in preparation for a possible recommendation to the full council. However, this time he said he wanted to refer the item to the city's administration, which means Mayor Kevin Dumas and Budget and Administration Director …

The rationale presented by F. Cook makes about as much sense as trying to make a parachute out of concrete! The irony is that when I started my term on the Council in Jan., '08, it was Brian Kirby who urged me to pursue such a project . . . without the least suggestion that I consult with anyone other than fellow Ordinance committee members. Frank's irrational "defense" is "the emperor with no …   more ›

Former State Rep "Not Impressed" With Candidates Advocating Higher Taxes

Bill Bowles was disappointed with comments from three candidates for Attleboro City Councilor.

To the Editor: I  saw the candidates forum last week, and was impressed that candidates were promoting local business. I was not, however, impressed that At Large City Council candidates Peter Blais, Anthony Parziale, and Kim Allard were advocating higher taxes for homeowners at a time when people are un-employed, under employed, and home foreclosures are at an all time high. Several years ago, the Chamber of Commerce testified before the City Council saying that real estate taxes are a concern, but not near the top of the list of whether a business will locate here. Factors, such as availability of parcels ready for development, an able workforce, cost of skilled employees, availability of utilities, permitting costs by the health and …

Robert up admit you don't know any of these people. With that said don't be so quick to judge the elder had a reason for what he did and Ms Allard had a reason. Without knowing anything except what you may have read in the paper don't be so quick to decide. There are always 2 sides to every story. Having seen the truth and heard the other side I realized I almost judged to quickly. Again indicted…   more ›
