In wake of the deadly mass shooting in Connecticut, the state representative-elect says "we need to make it easier to access and encourage mental health care more than it is easier to access a gun."

Attleboro State Rep.-elect Paul Heroux released the following statement in response to the mass killing at a Connecticut elementary school: If it is true that the 12/14/12 Connecticut shooter was suffering from serious mental illness, and I believe it is, the awful shooting in Connecticut reminds us of why we need to make it easier to access and encourage mental health care more than it is easier to access a gun. Put another way, our culture encourages gun ownership but stigmatizes mental health treatment. No one asks to suffer from metal illness anymore than anyone asks to suffer from asthma or diabetes. If these are treated a person can live a fairly normal life. If neither are treated, tragedy can happen. My deepest condolences go out …

The Democrat wins by a wide margin.
The people of the 2nd Bristol District, which includes most of Attleboro, will have a new representative in the state House. Democratic challenger Paul Heroux defeated Republican incumbent George Ross Tuesday night with 58.15 percent of the vote. Many people expected this to be a close election, but it wasn't. With 70.2 percent of registered voters participating, Heroux won all 11 precincts in the district—all by wide margins. This came as a surprise to many people, including Heroux. "I really didn't think I was going to win," said Heroux, speaking in a private room during his victory gathering at his home on Mechanic Street. "I thought I was going to lose by about 1 percent, 2 percent. I knew I had a chance, I had a shot, but I didn't …

Local newspaper The Sun Chronicle is calling for change with its endorsements for the two local state House races. In an editorial that appeared in the Tuesday edition titled "New Faces Needed in Mass. House," the newspaper recommended voters choose Democrat Paul Heroux in the election for the 2nd Bristol District (which includes most of Attleboro) and Democrat A. Keith Carreiro in the contest for the 4th Bristol District (which includes Seekonk and several other communities). Both Democrats are facing Republican incumbents coming off their first terms in the House, with Heroux challenging Rep. George Ross and Carreiro taking on Rep. Steven Howitt. Regarding the incumbents, The Chronicle wrote, "Both have had lackluster first terms and now…

Incumbent George Ross says he was making a dismissive hand motion and not an obscene gesture.
Democratic challenger Paul Heroux has accused Republican state Rep. George Ross of giving the audience the infamous one-finger salute at the debate between the two men Thursday at Attleboro High School. Ross said this did not happen. Heroux issued a statement to the media during the weekend saying Ross, who represents the 2nd Bristol District (including most of Attleboro), should issue an apology to every resident. This is not the first demand for an apology by a candidate in this race. Ross demanded Heroux apologize to veterans during the debate for his statement in a Patch article that he had not voted from 2004 to 2008 because no race piqued his interest. This comment led to some boos from the Heroux friendly audience, and then the …

The debate between Rep. George Ross and challenger Paul Heroux is not a friendly affair.
State Rep. George Ross and challenger Paul Heroux showed no love for each other in an election debate Thursday night at Attleboro High School. The atmosphere was disagreeable and at times hostile as the two stated their cases for why they should be in the state House representing the 2nd Bristol District, which includes most of Attleboro. Ross, a Republican who was elected to the House seat in 2010 after serving seven terms on the City Council, touted his accomplishments, which he said included banning the dangerous drug known as bath salts, naming a bridge after a local couple killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and delivering local aid as well as state surplus money to Attleboro. Heroux, an administration and policy consultant with…
