State police will operate a checkpoint "Friday into Saturday" during "varied hours" on a "public way."
Massachusetts State Police announced this week a sobriety checkpoint will be set up "Friday into Saturday" during "varied hours" on a "public way" in Bristol County "The purpose is to further educate the motoring public and strengthen the public's awareness to the need of detecting and removing those motorists who operate under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs from our roadways," states a police press release. The release further states, "The selection of vehicles will not be arbitrary, safety will be assured, and any inconveniences to motorists will be minimized with advance notice to reduce fear and anxiety." 12:30 p.m. update: Gregg Miliote, spokesman for the Bristol County District Attorney's Office, says the death does not appear to be suspicious. **** Massachusetts State Police pulled a body from the Manchester Pond Reservoir in Attleboro during the 10 a.m. hour. Massachusetts State Police and local police departments will be out this holiday weekend looking for drunk, impaired and dangerous drivers.
Drunk driving arrests by Massachusetts State Police increased by 30 percent or more than 1,100 drivers, said Massachusetts State Police Superintendent Colonel Timothy Allen at a press conference outside of Massachusetts State Police headquarters in Framingham Friday morning. As of yesterday, Dec. 27, Massachusetts State Police had arrested 4,866 individuals and charged them with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. In 2011, Massachusetts State Police arrested 3,728 individuals. The following is adapted from a press release from the Massachusetts State Police: A single car crash early Saturday morning on Route 95 North in Attleboro sent a man to the hospital with serious injuries. Massachusetts State Police troopers from the Foxboro barracks responded to a single vehicle crash on I-95 North in the vicinity of Exit 2A in Attleboro at about 4:10 a.m. Saturday. The victim (the operator and sole occupant of the vehcile), a 24-year-old Brockton man, was transported by Attleboro Fire and EMS to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries. A routine sobriety checkpoint for drivers in Bristol County is slated for the weekend.

Massachusetts State Police on Friday identified Joseph O. Irorere, 45, of Brockton as the truck driver who suffered electric shock Thursday when he got out of his vehicle that had struck sagging power lines on Interstate 95 in Attleboro. Irorere was at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in an unreported condition as of Friday morning, according to the police. The incident, which forced the freeway to close in both directions from about 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., is under investigation. "Preliminary investigation indicates that the wires sagged as a result of a structural issue on a utility pole set back from the highway," state police said in a statement. Two related vehicle crashes forced a section of Interstate 95 in Attleboro to close for nearly five hours early Sunday morning, according to ABC 6 in Providence. Two people were sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, the TV station reported. The first crash happened at about 1 a.m. when a southbound vehicle rear-ended another, sending a piece of tire and other debris into other lanes, Massachusetts state police told ABC 6, according to the TV station. Nobody was injured in that incident, but it led to the second crash. ABC 6 reported: Four vehicles hit the shredded tire, but none of those vehicles were damaged.
