Seekonk Student Honored for Volunteerism

Cameron Sears is among 49 Massachusetts students who won a $50 gift card and recognition certificate from Kohl's Department Stores for their volunteerism.

Cameron Sears, who just completed second grade at Martin Elementary School in Seekonk is among 49 Massachusetts students winning a $50 gift card and recognition certificate from Kohl's Department Stores for their volunteer efforts. Cameron and the other winners have qualified for a chance to win a $1,000 Kohl's Cares Scholarship, which will be announced in July. The Seekonk resident motivated his peers this past school year when he decided he did not want toys for his birthday, and instead requested people donate to a food drive being conducted by his school. The collected items were given to Doorways Food Pantry

School Bus Crashes in Seekonk

At least two children are injured in a crash.

  Nobody was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon when an elementary school bus crashed into a vehicle in Seekonk, NBC 10 in Providence reported. The TV station states: The school bus from Martin Elementary School was turning from Luther Street onto County Street when it bumped into a car stopped at a traffic light. NBC 10 reported that although there were no serious injuries, at least two children were placed on an ambulance. The Sun Chronicle reported three children with minor injuries were sent to Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence.

VIDEO: Seekonk 9/11 Anniversary Ceremony Honors Fallen

State representatives, Seekonk police and fire chiefs and the Rev. John Amaral gave words of reverence at the Seekonk Public Safety Complex Thursday night.

Chairs filled with families spread out across the Public Safety Complex parking lot to honor those lost in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks during an anniversary ceremony Thursday night. A short parade walked by Aitken Elementary and Martin Elementary School students started the ceremony. A bagpiper crooned as he led the proceedings. A color guard composed of rescue personnel stood watch. Seekonk Police Chief Ronald Charron recited the "Policeman's Prayer." In turn, Fire Chief Alan Jack recited the "Fireman's Prayer." Senator James Timilty and Rep. Steven Howitt also made short speeches. Don Kinniburgh, a member of American Legion Post 311, reminded the public to honor police and  fire department personnel. Martin Elementary School Welcomes a New Principal

Bartholomew Lush was hired by a committee headed by Superintendent Madeline Meyer last Friday.

Principal Kevin Madden left his post at the George R. Martin Elementary School this summer, but his position didn't stay vacant for long. A hiring committee made a swift move to find his replacement. After narrowing down the applicant pool of 69 to 14 and then down to a final four, the committee decided Bartholomew Lush, a New Bedford principal at the time, was the best fit for the school. "He was really well rounded in many areas ... He was a clear thinker, centered around what was best for the kids," said Superintendent Madeline Meyer, noting he has experience in technology. Families Have Fun in the Sun at Martin Elementary School

Martin Elementary School hosted its Spring Fling with lots of fun games for all ages.

It takes a team of volunteers to put together a successful event. Coordinators Darlene Sicard and Donna Ledoux pulled all those pieces together to produce a fun event for the families to enjoy at Martin Elementary School on Saturday. They used volunteers of all ages to run the games and other stations. The dunk tank is such a popular station each year, the students have to earn their spot to get wet. The Seekonk fire department was on hand with its traveling safety house. This house is shared by those in the Fall River District 3 and was purchased with  S.A.F.E.(Student Awareness of Fire Education) grant funding.
