NBA center Jason Collins announced Monday he is gay, making him the first active professional male athlete in a major American sport to reveal he is a homosexual. The former Boston Celtic wrote about his decision in a Sports Illustrated article that went online Monday and will appear in the May 6 print edition of the magazine. Collins, 34, wrote he decided to come out after U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III, whose district includes Attleboro, told him he had marched last year in Boston's Gay Pride Parade. U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III, whose 4th district includes Attleboro, and the Department of Labor will host a town hall-style meeting May 3 for employees of this city's former Texas Insturments plant who may have developed cancer or other health problems because of exposure to radioactive material. The decision to hold the meeting comes after articles appeared in The Sun Chronicle earlier this year detailing how a large number of former employees suffering from cancer were receiving medical benefits through a DOL program. However, many others had not been informed about this service, the newspaper reported. As part of Peace Corps Week 2013, U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III, whose 4th district includes Attleboro, on Thursday introduced his first bill as a congressman. Kennedy introduced the Peace Corps Commemoration Act, which allows the Peace Corps to establish a "commemorative work" on federal land in Washington D.C., according to a press release issued by his office. The Peace Corps was founded by Kennedy's great uncle, President John F. Kennedy, in 1961. Joe Kennedy III, whose district includes Attleboro, announced last week his office is participating in the annual Congressional Art Competition, which is a high school visual arts contest. Now through April 19, high school students in the 4th Congressional District can submit paintings, drawings, collages, computer-generated art, prints, mixed media and photography pieces to Kennedy's office on Crafts Street in Newton. An independent arts panel that includes Attleboro Arts Museum Executive Director Mim Fawcett will select a finalist for each media category. Dozens of people crammed into U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III's North Main Street office Saturday afternoon to meet the congressman at his first official event in Attleboro since taking office earlier this month. Kennedy's district includes Attleboro and Seekonk. Among the local dignitaries who attended the event and got a few words in with Kennedy were City Councilors Jeremy Denlea and Walter Thibodeau, state Sen. James Timilty, former Mayor and current Attleboro Redevelopment Authority Chair Judy Robbins and former state Rep. Bill Bowles. Kennedy's local office is located at 8 North Main St. in Attleboro.
