Kennedy Inspires First Openly Gay NBA Player's Coming Out

Jason Collins was a roommate of Attleboro's congressional representative.

NBA center Jason Collins announced Monday he is gay, making him the first active professional male athlete in a major American sport to reveal he is a homosexual. The former Boston Celtic wrote about his decision in a Sports Illustrated article that went online Monday and will appear in the May 6 print edition of the magazine. Collins, 34, wrote he decided to come out after U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III, whose district includes Attleboro, told him he had marched last year in Boston's Gay Pride Parade. Kennedy was Collins' roomate at Stanford University. Collins wrote: I'm seldom jealous of others, but hearing what Joe had done filled me with envy. Kennedy to Host Attleboro Meeting on Former TI Employees' Cancer

The purpose is to let former employees and their families know help is available, the congressman says.

U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III, whose 4th district includes Attleboro, and the Department of Labor will host a town hall-style meeting May 3 for employees of this city's former Texas Insturments plant who may have developed cancer or other health problems because of exposure to radioactive material. The decision to hold the meeting comes after articles appeared in The Sun Chronicle earlier this year detailing how a large number of former employees suffering from cancer were receiving medical benefits through a DOL program. However, many others had not been informed about this service, the newspaper reported. Congressman Joe Kennedy III Introduces First Bill

Kennedy introduced the Peace Corps Commemoration Act on Thursday.

As part of Peace Corps Week 2013, U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III, whose 4th district includes Attleboro, on Thursday introduced his first bill as a congressman. Kennedy introduced the Peace Corps Commemoration Act, which allows the Peace Corps to establish a "commemorative work" on federal land in Washington D.C., according to a press release issued by his office. The Peace Corps was founded by Kennedy's great uncle, President John F. Kennedy, in 1961. "At a time when the international community was fractured by the Cold War, the founding of the Peace Corps reminded America of the best it had to offer: service to others for the common cause of global peace, mutual understanding, prosperity and progress," said Kennedy, according to the press …

Kennedy Opens Student Art Competition

The deadline to submit artwork to Kennedy's Newton office is April 19.

Do you think your artwork is good enough to hang in the U.S. Capitol? U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III, whose district includes Attleboro, announced last week his office is participating in the annual Congressional Art Competition, which is a high school visual arts contest.  Now through April 19, high school students in the 4th Congressional District can submit paintings, drawings, collages, computer-generated art, prints, mixed media and photography pieces to Kennedy's office on Crafts Street in Newton. An independent arts panel that includes Attleboro Arts Museum Executive Director Mim Fawcett will select a finalist for each media category. Kennedy Comes to Attleboro

The new congressman holds an open house at his Attleboro office.

Dozens of people crammed into U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III's North Main Street office Saturday afternoon to meet the congressman at his first official event in Attleboro since taking office earlier this month. Kennedy's district includes Attleboro and Seekonk. Among the local dignitaries who attended the event and got a few words in with Kennedy were City Councilors Jeremy Denlea and Walter Thibodeau, state Sen. James Timilty, former Mayor and current Attleboro Redevelopment Authority Chair Judy Robbins and former state Rep. Bill Bowles.  Kennedy's local office is located at 8 North Main St. in Attleboro.

Rep. Kennedy Announces Attleboro Open House

Congressman Joe Kennedy III, whose 4th District includes Attleboro and Seekonk, announced Monday he will host an open house Saturday at his Attleboro office, located at 8 North Main St.  The public will have a chance to meet Kennedy and his district staff, according to a press release issued by the congressman's office. The event will begin at 1 p.m. "Over the course of the campaign, I promised each and every one of you that my door would always be open," said Kennedy, according to the release.
