Warriors Lose to Bourne at Home [VIDEO]

The Bourne Canalmen traveled to Seekonk on Friday and handed the local football team a loss in the season opener. The 24-0 defeat left Seekonk with a lot to think about and Bourne with a jubilant ride home.

As the sun set on Seekonk High School Friday evening, the outlook for the team's season opener seemed bright. Seekonk players and coaches were on the field, looking crisp in their pregame warmups and confident that a difficult preseason had made them a better team. Bourne players and coaches, by contrast, were sitting in gridlock on Interstate 195. The game was eventually delayed by 15 minutes to allow Bourne to get off their bus and prepare to play. But once things kicked off, it was clear that Bourne had arrived. Seekonk attempted an onside kick to start the game, and the Calanmen were ready and scooped it up, allowing them to start with a short field. The first quarter was a battle of field position. With punts and failed fourth down …

Warrior Football Camp in Full Swing [VIDEO]

The team will look to replace a prolific runningback, groom a new starting quarterback and continue its defensive success.

Seekonk has a number of holes to fill on its football team, since they graduated five starters from last year. One was All-American back Matt Lockwood. "Last year we had a horse and we rode that horse," said coach Jack Whalen during Monday's first practice of the season. The coach continued, "You don't replace a kid like Matt in a season. Will we have another kid like that? Probably, but we don't have one right behind him." Jack Kane, a halfback last year, will move to quarterback this season. "It wasn't my first choice, because now we've got three untried varsity backs, obviously that could be a concern," admits Whalen. With questions about what Seekonk will get from its backfield, the team may look to go a bit more vertical this year. "…

Seekonk Defeats League Champion Dighton-Rehoboth Thanksgiving Day

Dighton-Rehoboth may be going to the playoffs over Seekonk, but the Warriors beat the Falcons 12-7 at the opposing team's turf on Thursday afternoon.

On Thanksgiving morning, varsity football Coach Jack Whalen guaranteed Seekonk a win before afternoon turkey and cranberry sauce, sort of. "If at the end of this game, you can look each other in the eyes and say, 'We did our best,' then I guarantee a win," Whalen told the Seekonk High School Warriors as they prepared to partake in a rivalry older than any of the players. Teammates had been fiercely preparing to go up against Dighton-Rehoboth (D-R) for weeks before the game. "It's here boys, we shouldn't have to say anything else!" Seekonk captains screamed from inside a huddle just before kickoff. Seekonk kicked away to D-R to start things off. Starting from their own 37, D-R would punt from the 46 after three short running plays that …

Five Warriors Named to All-Star Team

Though Matt Lockwood is named a Riddell All-American, he and his teammates are focused on the upcoming Dighton-Rehoboth Thanksgiving game, not post-season awards.

After varsity football practice on Monday, Nov. 22, coach Jack Whalen presented senior fullback Matt Lockwood with a helmet commemorating his selection as a Riddell All-American. Lockwood and four of his teammates were selected to the All-South Coast Conference (SCC) all-star team. Senior cornerback Justin Carvalho, senior quarterback Jake Lyman, senior linebacker Rob Fontaine and junior defensive lineman Michael Braunsdorf joined Lockwood before practice. In a fashion reminiscent of the local professional football team, they were more concerned with wins than awards. "That's our championship," said two time all SCC quarterback Jake Lyman of the team's upcoming meeting with the Dighton-Rehoboth team (D-R). His teammates, three of whom …

Warriors Beat Lincoln Lions

Seekonk invaded Lincoln and threw their own party on the Lions' Senior Night. Now the 7-2 Warriors look forward to a week off before meeting Dighton-Rehoboth on Thanksgiving.

The Seekonk High Warriors traveled to Lincoln Friday night to take on the Lions in a game with no league implications but in the hopes of testing themselves as a team. Lincoln's vaunted passing attack was well known going into the contest. "They have a great quarterback, a great passing attack," said Warriors Coach Jack Whalen. However, the Lions managed to complete only one pass all night against Seekonk. Their lone touchdown came on a seven yard strike in the fourth quarter. "We did a great job covering the kids," said Whalen of Lincoln's receivers. "And when we didn't, we were hitting people," the coach added. Other than that, it was all Seekonk. After a very bad four and out to start the game (in which Seekonk had elected to punt, but …

Seekonk Beats Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech 30-7 on Friday Homecoming

Matt Lockwood scores four touchdowns as Seekonk wins convincingly and celebrates homecoming.

Christie Mendes and Mike Luti of the freshmen class, sophomores Ruby Wong and Kong Trong, and the Class of 2012's Molly Rowland and Tyler Eddy were named Princes and Princesses of the homecoming court Friday. Elliot Gault and Ashley Lopes were named King and Queen. With all of those titles taken, Matt Lockwood could have been the emperor or sultan on the football field. The Warriors took to the football field where they hosted Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech (NBVT) Friday. Seekonk's thunder and lightening backfield was a little heavy on the thunder as Lockwood scored four touchdowns in the game, but Justin Carvalho (lightening) did his fair share of rushing. "Lockwood was a bear," said Seekonk Head Coach Jack Whalen. "He was the guy we knew …
