He says he wants to continue the momentum gained during the recent special election.
A little less than four months after he was narrowly defeated in an election for a Board of Selectmen seat, Seekonk native Paul Buckley announced Wednesday that he will try again. Buckley became the fourth person to pull papers for the April election. Buckley, who sits on the town's board of assessors, ran against Nelson Almeida in a special election in the fall for the seat vacated by Bill Rice. Almeida won by 32 votes. "This is a different race," Buckley said. "I think there's some momentum for me and I want to continue with it. I want to see if I can win in a different type of atmosphere." Board Chair Francis Cavaco's seat is the only one being contested in this election. He is officially in the race after having pulled papers and …

The Board of Selectmen deadlocks with a 2-2 tie on whether to renew Bob Lamoureux's contract. Selectman Gary Sagar refuses to vote.
Whether Public Works Superintendent Bob Lamoureux will work for the town of Seekonk past next June may be determined by an attorney. With Gary Sagar voting "present," the Board of Selectmen was unable to break a 2-2 tie Wednesday night on whether to begin contract renewal negotiations with Lamoureux, who has held his position for nearly eight years. Town Administrator Pam Nolan said this meant his contract was automatically renewed for a year. Selectman Bob McLintock said he wanted to hear an opinion about what the voting result meant from the town's legal consultant. A large crowd, made up mostly of Lamoureux supporters, attended the meeting. Several times they let their emotions loose with cheers, jeers and critical comments. Let Patch …
Seekonk police investigate an argument between Board of Selectmen Chair Francis Cavaco and Public Works Superintendent Bob Lamoureux.
Bob Lamoureux, Seekonk's public works superintendent, said when he greeted Board of Selectmen Chair Francis Cavaco in a Town Hall hallway Tuesday morning, Cavaco responded with an unfriendly command that featured an expletive. But Cavaco said he was having an asthma attack at the time and Lamoureux misunderstood him. The incident was investigated by the Seekonk Police Department. There were no eyewitnesses to the exchange between the two men, who have had a contentious relationship. Town Engineer David Cabral said he heard the expletive, according to a police report written by Lt. David Dyson (the report is attached, it contains profanities). Town Clerk Jan Parker and Assistant Town Clerk Karen McHugh told Dyson that Lamoureux followed …

Carol Bragg says she had failed to see the goodness and kindness in Francis Cavaco. She presents him with a rose and apologies.
Former Seekonk Selectwoman Carol Bragg offered an olive branch in the form of a rose to Board of Selectmen Chair Francis Cavaco on Wednesday. She apologized for being insensitive toward his feelings in the past and said she no longer harbored ill will toward him. Speaking during the Community Speaks portion of the selectmen meeting, Bragg noted that she and Cavaco have had a strained relationship. "I have been careless of your feelings and insensitive," she said. "And because I'm committed to a kinder and gentler community, I feel I need to apologize to you for that." Let Patch save you time. Board Chair Francis Cavaco says a selectman who will not be at the meeting on Wednesday had asked for the item to be removed.
A vote by the Seekonk Board of Selectmen on whether to begin contract negotiations with Public Works Superintendent Bob Lamoureux will not take place Wednesday as originally planned . Board Chair Francis Cavaco removed the item from the agenda prior to its publication Monday afternoon at the request of Selectman Bob McLintock, he told Seekonk Patch. "Mr. McLintock will not be attending the meeting this week," said Cavaco on Monday. "He asked me today if I could put this on the agenda when we have a full board." Lamoreux's contract expires at the end of June. He must be notified by the end of this month whether selectmen plan to renew it. The board has meetings scheduled for Dec. 12 and 19. Supporters of Lamoureux told Patch last week …

The grandson of a former selectman and a TV talk show host pull papers for April contests.
Election Day in Seekonk is not until April, but potential candidates are already beginning to prepare for the contests. Michael DelRosso, grandson of former Selectman Robert DelRosso, pulled papers Monday for a potential Board of Selectmen run. Also on Monday, local television talk show host Jeffrey Starr Mararian pulled papers for the school committee contest. Both men must collect 50 signatures from registered Seekonk voters to get their names on the ballot. If DelRosso enters the race, he would face Francis Cavaco, the current BOS chair. Cavaco announced last month that he would seek a new term. His seat is the only one on the BOS up for renewal in April. Cavaco has served on the board since he won a special election in August 2008 to …

Board of Selectmen Chair Francis Cavaco says it looks tacky.
Update 11:45 a.m. Board of Selectmen Chair Francis Cavaco contacted Patch to say his comment on Thursday that the Department of Public Works was responsible for putting the barrel on the statue was incorrect. "The information that I received was in error, and it had come from reliable sources," Cavaco said. Update 10:10 a.m. Seekonk Veterans Agent Seth Bai posted a message on Seekonk Patch taking blame for the barrel on the statue. He wrote: The D.P.W. is not to be blamed for this mishap. I had informed the D.P.W. that I needed a Barrel to conceal the monument. I had said I purchased a Patriotic-Banner to wrap around the Barrel to present and unveil the monument at the ceremony on Saturday morning during the groundbreaking. There was …

Local activist David Saad wrote a statement in a blog entry recently posted on Seekonk Patch that implies Board of Selectmen Chair Francis Cavaco does not show respect toward Seekonk Veterans Agent Set Bai. Cavaco contacted Patch late Thursday to say this is not accurate. "Seekonk Veterans Agent Seth Bai has done an outstanding job for the veterans in our community," wrote Cavaco in an email. "I have the utmost respect for our town's veterans agent and have stated such many times at numerous Board of Selectmen meetings." Saad, a critic of Cavaco and others in local government, praised the selectmen chair in his blog for his speech during this week's Town Meeting that advocated putting $10,000 of town money toward the planned Veterans …

Board of Selectmen Chair Francis Cavaco and newspaper editor Mike Kirby agree to talk in private.
Just as Seekonk Board of Selectmen Chair Francis Cavaco was about to share his opinions, likely negative, of The Sun Chronicle freelance reporter Joe Siegel, the newspaper's editor asked Cavaco at the meeting Wednesday night if a conversation could take place in private. Cavaco agreed to the proposal, and said he would table an agenda item about Siegel for two weeks. Cavaco did not specify what he planned to say about Siegel, who has been the newspaper's beat reporter covering Seekonk for several years. The agenda item states, "Chairman to discuss professionalism of Sun Chronicle freelance reporter Joe Siegel." The selectmen chair recently said in an interview on Jeffrey Starr Mararian's TV9 talk show that Siegel had misquoted him. Cavaco …

Timothy Murray will take the tour of the Fall River Avenue facility on Oct. 11.
Lt. Governor Timothy Murray will be in Seekonk on Thursday, Oct. 11th at the invitation of state Sen. James E. Timilty, whose duties include chairman of the public safety & homeland security and member of the Transportation Committee, to tour the Massachusetts Department of Transportation facility on Fall River Avenue. This tour is for the purpose of allowing the town to co-occupy the site for a new south end fire station. We have been working on access to this site since 2009; this location has been identified by our fire chief as a preferred location for a new South Fire Station. Access to this site for a new south station would facilitate our response to the south end, while providing a location with no land acquisition costs. Sen. …
