Owner Arthur Bombardier shares the story of how he became the owner and operator of the place where he had his first job.
Arthur Bombardier began working at Tex Barry's Coney Island Diner in Attleboro more than 30 years ago, and he said he's happy to be at the place where he had his first job. "My mother was working for the gentleman that had this place beforehand," he said. "I started working for her and my aunt when I was 15." Bombardier said he wasn't always sure he was going to make and sell hotdogs for a living, but it did grow on him. "When I first started, I was thinking about becoming an accountant," he said. Bombardier said his mother bought the restaurant in 1985 when the original chain that opened in 1929 went out of business. He said he had to take over because she had become ill the same year. The councilor is seeking a second term as the representative of Ward 5.
City Councilor Jeremy Denlea has taken care of business early to get his name on the ballot for Attleboro's fall election. The Ward 5 representative became the first official candidate Friday when he returned his nomination papers to City Hall with the required number of signatures, which were certified by the Election's Department. Denlea is seeking a second term as the Ward 5 councilor. In an email to Attleboro Patch, he wrote he was proud of contributing to several city government accomplishments during his first term. Three outgoing Attleboro City Councilors were recognized for their service Tuesday night during their final meeting. Kimberly Allard, Cherie Felos and Duff White were honored by President Frank Cook and Vice President Walter Thibodeau with a presentation of a plaque and the opportunity to speak. "This is always one of those nights that is both happy and sad," Cook said. "We’re sad to see people go but we’re happy that they served." Allard, who is Attleboro's longest standing city councilor after serving 10 years, thanked her family and friends, particularly her sister, Bonnie. A total of 343 voters turned out for the Ward 5 preliminary election.
Attleboro City Council Ward 5 candidates Jeremy Denlea and Duff White will move on to the November election. Newcomer Jeremey Denlea garnered the most votes with 128 votes, or 37.32 percent, while Duff White was in second with 111, or 32.36 percent of the vote, according to Elections Manager Maryanne Draine. Former City Councilor Jerry Chase had a total of 85 votes. Howard Levine, who dropped out of the race last week, garnered 19 of votes. "I am thrilled tonight to beat an incumbent by 17 votes," Denlea said after the votes were counted. "I look forward to all the hard work leading up to November." Candidates for Attleboro City Council stood in the rain outside of La Salette Shrine, the Ward 5 polling place, greeting voters during the Ward City Council Preliminary Election Tuesday afternoon. Former City Councilor Jerry Chase had already voted, but current City Councilor Duff White and newcomer Jeremy Denlea. Incumbent Duff White, who announced Monday to to enter his name in the race as a write-in, was disappointed with the low turnout as of noon, but hoped the 3,549 registered voters in Ward 5 would exercise their right to vote. Attleboro Residents with Important Safety Concerns (@RISC) hope to stop companies like Ze-gen from building in Attleboro.
A group of Attleboro residents have asked the Attleboro City Council to consider changing language in zoning laws to stop companies like Boston-based Ze-gen from ever calling Attleboro their home. Ze-gen announced last month that it will no longer continue its plans to open a plant in Attleboro. Charlie Adler and George Morin, members of Attleboro Residents with Important Safety Concerns (@RISC), went before the council Tuesday night to express concern for what they consider loopholes in Attleboro's zoning laws and ask for an amendment to the law. Attleboro has paid nearly $232,000 in legal fees through the end of March this year.
The city of Attleboro has paid more than $231,000 in legal fees to the city solicitor for nearly 1,277 billable hours from January through March 2011, Robert Mangiaratti, the city's attorney, told members of the Attleboro City Council Tuesday. The city has faced huge legal expenses because of the several litigation cases brought against the city and the increase in foreclosures the city's collection department has faced, Mangiaratti said. "I’ve long thought this information should see the fresh air and sunlight," Councilor Richard Conti told members of the council. Councilors in Attleboro voted to commission a feasibility study on a new animal shelter.

We regret the error. The Attleboro City Council voted on Tuesday night to commission a feasibility study that would look at the possibility of building a new $600,000 animal shelter in the city. After having had discussions about the shelter with Mayor Kevin Dumas, City Councilor Brian Kirby told his fellow councilors that the first step toward building a new animal shelter would have to start with a feasibility study on the design and construction of a shelter. Attleboro City Councilors on Tuesday approved a long, drawn-out ordinance on precious metals, even after one of their fellow councilors walked out before the vote. Just as city councilors began to vote on whether to approve the ordinance, Councilor Duff White got up and walked away and did not return until after the voting by the other councilors was complete. White did not recuse himself from the vote, just simply walked off. The move clearly surprised some of his fellow councilors. The approved ordinance will require any dealer of jewelry, precious metals or precious gems and any pawnbroker to keep a written record of every purchase or pawn transaction involving used precious metals for 14 days. The co-owner of an Attleboro Pawn Shop said he was given an ultimatum by a city councilor.
Arthur Frye, owner of the Attleboro Pawn Shop on Pleasant Street, once assisted police and did business on a hand shake. Now, however, after more than 15 years running the show, Frye is retiring and his three sons — Eric, Cliff and Scott — are taking over the family business. The sons have appeared before the Attleboro City Council on multiple occasions to discuss interest rates on the merchandise that is bought and sold from their store, to discuss how the pawn industry works and most recently to address the issue of record keeping.
