School District Hires a Special Ed. Director ... Maybe

The school committee votes to hire the interim Director. Two school committee members not in attendance say they are disappointed a search was abandoned. A finalist for a job in Arlington, Marisa McCarthy has not decided if she will accept Attleboro's off

Interim Special Education Director Marisa McCarthy could have a long-term future in the Attleboro school district—if she wants it. The school committee voted 6-0 Wednesday to approve Superintendent Pia Durkin's request go grant McCarthy a three-year contract. However, McCarthy is one of two finalists for the same job in Arlington, and School Committee Chair Mike Tyler said she would not remove her name from consideration there. The decision to appoint McCarthy was a sudden departure from the previous plan to do a full search and accept applications. A job notice appears online with a Feb. 25 application deadline. Tyler said he re-convened the search committee last week to determine if its members favored giving the job to McCarthy. He …

So Ms Craw does not appreciate decisions made by a chosen few????Hmmmmmmm. We'll come back to that comment in the future. Ms. Craw, we can see right through your contrarian few points and motivation for them. Yes, another "gotcha Craw moment". How much support did you give this process? About as much as you did with the Superintendent Focus group process? Right you had Doctor's appointments …   more ›

Principal Reassignment Benefits All Children

The situation at Thacher requires Catherine Zinni's talents in special education and ELL. I am confident she will accomplish great things there as she did at Willett. The entire system and all children in Attleboro will be better served by the change.

The following is addressed to current and future Willett Elementary School parents: I didn't receive the news about Ms. Zinni's transfer until late in the day Friday. I wasn't on-line again until late Sunday night when I was reviewing our materials for the school committee Meeting Monday, at which many of you spoke at open forum.   My apologies as I would like to have been more proactive about contacting you over the weekend, particularly the Willett PTO to hear your concerns.   I understand that it is disheartening for Willett parents to see Ms. Zinni move to Thacher. She has been great to work with and will be sorely missed. I was looking forward to my son spending his kindergarten and elementary years with Willett under her …

Parents Criticize Principal's Reassignment

Superintendent Pia Durkin says it would be "very comfortable" for Catherine Zinni to remain at Willett Elementary, but "life is about taking on challenges."

Attleboro parents and school committee members were unable to convince Superintendent Pia Durkin at the meeting Monday night to reverse her decision to transfer Willet Elementary School principal Catherine Zinni to the same post at Thacher Elementary. Several speakers said the move would derail the progress the school has made under Zinni's leadership. Durkin said this would not happen, and that one person is not responsible for a school's success. Willet PTO President Laurie Brasil said transferring Zinni would set the school back by at least a year. "As a volunteer, it is hard enough finding the time to plan and work on an event," Brasil said. "With a new principal, we will have to spend countless hours going over every little thing, …

We have paid someone to destroy our school system. We should not, and did not sit idly by and let her continue. The voices of the public and teachers where heard and the MAJORITY of the committee voted not to renew her contract. She has not made the best educational decisions for our children, that is why she is being let go from our district.   more ›

Principal Zinni Leaving Willett for Thacher

Catherine Zinni will be replaced by Kate Campbell.

Willett Elementary School parents received a phone message Friday afternoon with a familiar theme from the 2011-12 school year. Principal Catherine Zinni is leaving, but unlike the others school chiefs who are departing, she will remain in the district. Zinni will become the principal at Thacher Elementary School. Willett's new principal will be Kate Campbell, who Zinni described in the message as having "years of experience in Attleboro schools." Zinni has been the principal at Willett since 2008. "As a PTO president, I'm sure she will do amazing work there, but she will be greatly missed," wrote Willett PTO President Laurie Brasil in an email to Attleboro-Seekonk Patch. "She has been welcoming to new ideas, which has made for a fresh and…

We are placing unqualified candidates in major positions. The children do not have stablility in their schools and this effects learning. The staff will feel this and this will passed on to the teachers. Children should be taught to voice their concerns and push for what is right. I do not consider this whining. Whining is when someone dismisses an issue like this because they support one person…   more ›
