Mike Atwood on Boston Marathon Bombing: 'This Was Personal'

Mike Atwood, a longtime coach and runner in the area, shared his thoughts and experience from Monday's attacks on the Boston Marathon.

Editor's note: Mike Atwood, with local ties to Attleboro (ran at Bishop Feehan), Foxborough (coached at Foxborough High and teaches at Foxborough Regional Charter School), Easton (coached at Oliver Ames) and Mansfield (coached at MHS) shared his thoughts from Monday's tragedy on his Facebook page Tuesday. This was personal. Boston is my city, where I run, where I went to college, where my family spends our weekends, where I go to Red Sox games with my dad, who was born there 81 years ago. It is our playground. Yesterday started out as a monumental day that I had obsessed about for six months, a day where my running club celebrated our hard work, a day where I ran past enthusiastically cheering friends on the route, friends from high school…

My daughter, Krista Perry, grew up in Seekonk and ran in the Boston Marathon (she is also the former editor of Chelmsford Patch). She was stopped 6 miles from the finish line and, thank God, is fine. She also expressed her thoughts after yesterday's tragedy. The link to her blog is: http://beyondtheboards.net/2013/04/16/my-city-my-marathon/ Carol Perry   more ›

Bishop Feehan Students Get a Jump Start

Incoming freshman “learning the ropes” at the Summer Academic Academy.

Bishop Feehan High School recently held its annual two-week-long Summer Academic Academy for incoming freshmen. More than 100 students chose to participate and enjoyed many opportunities for "learning the ropes" of a new campus, including participating in group activities to enhance social interaction, a review of math and English skills and "survival" skills such as how to take notes, use the library, stay motivated and avoid discipline problems.  Ann Perry, vice president of academic affairs, said "The Summer Academic Academy has been a great success each year. Whether the kids realize it or not, it gives them the confidence to start the year off on the right foot and helps to eliminate the first-day-of-school jitters.

Thanks from a Graduate

Bishop Feehan's first deaf student reflects on those who helped him along the way.

I graduated from Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro on June 13, 1967. That was 45 years ago yesterday. Wow! I was the first deaf student to come to this school in the fall of 1963. Thanks to my first principal, Sister Mary Urban, who took a chance on me. When I went to this school, we did not have sign language interpreters in the classrooms to help me understand all the information that was available for the regular students. It really took a lot of patience to sit there, sometimes feeling totally lost about what was happening. Thanks to the perseverance and help of many of my teachers and classmates, I was able to succeed. They helped me by giving me copies of their notes to use for my studies. Thanks to my second principal, Sister …

The appointment was approved by Bishop George W. Coleman and announced by Diocesan Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael Griffin at a gathering of faculty and staff in the Bishop Feehan chapel on Tuesday. Class of 2012 Graduates at Bishop Feehan

For the first time, a graduation takes places outdoors on the Attleboro campus.

The weather was cooperative on a beautiful Thursday evening for the first outdoor graduation on the Bishop Feehan campus in Attleboro. The 263 members of the Class of 2012 received their diplomas at the school's McGrath Stadium. School President Christopher Servant said the decision to move the ceremony outside was due to "increased enrollment coupled with our desire to accommodate more guests." He joked, "The pessimists among us will ask, 'What if it rains?' While the optimists will respond, 'It will make the event all the more memorable.'" In her Valedictorian address, Lindsey Claus—a Mansfield resident who will attend Harvard in the fall—spoke about the "incredible gift" of life. "My fellow classmates, as we go forward, let's use an …
