Durkin Named Finalist to Head New Bedford Schools

Attleboro's school district chief is one of three finalists for the job.

School district Superintendent Pia Durkin could have a new job after she leaves Attleboro at the end of June. The New Bedford School Committee announced Wednesday that she is one of three finalists for the job as that district's chief, according to SouthCoastToday.com Durkin has headed the Attleboro district since 2006. Although she never formally announced her resignation or retirement, she did not ask for her contract to be renewed and told The Sun Chronicle last year it appeared she would not return after the 2012-13 school year.  Attleboro is doing a superintendent search. Attleboro Schools Superintendent Selection Committee Formed

The names of the committee members will not be released for three weeks.

A nine-member committee has been formed by Attleboro School Committee Chair Mike Tyler to help with the school district superintendent selection. Who is on that committee will remain a mystery to the general public for three weeks. Tyler announced at the Monday school committee meeting that he submitted the names of the panelists to his colleagues Sunday. He said no school committee members are on the list. The special committee will reduce the number of applicants to a minimum of five people. From that group, the school committee will choose a new superintendent. Final Focus Group on Attleboro Superintendent Search Tonight

The session is open to all residents, even those without children in the school district.

If you have a strong opinion on what the Attleboro school district needs in a new superintendent, or even if you just want to have some input on the search, then you should attend the final focus group session tonight at City Hall. It will take place at 6:30 p.m. and is expected to last an hour. The session is open to all residents, including those without children in the school district.  In addition to attending the focus group, residents can take an online survey that can be found here.  The school district is expected to advertise the job opening beginning next month.
