The Attleboro girls basketball program holds a banquet in Mansfield.
The Attleboro High girls basketball program closed out the season recently with its annual banquet at the Holiday Inn in Mansfield. Varsity head coach Missy Traversi welcomed players, family and friends. Varsity Awards went to: Bri Hochwarter and Sara Blackwell each received a $250 scholarship from the Attleboro Youth Basketball Association. Hochwarter, who sat out her junior and senior years with knee injuries, received a framed replica of her No. 24 basketball jersey. Clifton was named a Hockomock League All Star and Kerry Beland received an all-league honorable mention. Receiving recognition as varsity players were seniors Makaila Lombardy and Kirsten Terrien and sophomore Kimi Runey. Captains for the 2013-2014 season will be Clifton …

Attleboro High falls to Brockton in the MIAA tournament.
The Bombardiers closed out the 2012-13 girls varsity basketball season losing their preliminary tournament game to Brockton 66-40. Attleboro High could not match the athleticism or ball-hawking ability, combined with the torrid shooting, of the visiting team. Brockton scored first on an Attleboro turnover and held the lead at the end of the first quarter, never relinquishing it. The second quarter saw the Boxers increasing their lead by 11, until freshman Emily Houle hit back-to-back shots. A 15-point effort in that eight-minute segment was not enough to keep pace with the visitors from Brockton and the halftime score saw Attleboro down 56-28. The Attleboro High girls varsity basketball team will host Brockton Monday in the preliminary round of the MIAA South Division 1 tournament. Fourteenth-seeded Attleboro (12-10) and No. 19 Brockton (10-10) did not meet during the regular season. The game will take place at 7 p.m. If the Bombardiers win, they will face third-seeded North Attleboro (16-4) in the first round Wednesday. The Rocketeers defeated the Bombardiers 62-49 in December and 61-53 last month. Bishop Feehan will have two teams in the postseason. The second-seeded boys (16-4) have a bye in the preliminary round of the South Division 3 tournament and will play at home in the first round against either No. 15 O'Bryant (12-8) or No. 18 Dover-Sherborn (10-10). The team's seniors are honored before the game against Durfee.
The Attleboro High School girls varsity basketball will enter the postseason with momentum. The Bombardiers finished the regular season Wednesday at home with a 46-42 victory over Durfee. The game opened with Durfee taking a 4-0, but a three-point shot by Kirsten Terrien and a layup by Beth Clifton gave the Bombardiers a 5-4 lead. Point guard Abby Oliver took a Durfee charge, and two free throws by Clifton combined with a 10-foot shot by Kerri Beland put the girls in blue up 9-6. A quick three by Durfee and a buzzer-beater basket gave the Hilltoppers an 11-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Bombardiers have two games remaining before the start of postseason play.
With an opportunity to be the spoiler and knock the Panthers out of contention for a share of the Hockomock League Kelley-Rex Division championship, the Attleboro High School girls varsity basketball team played even with the home team for more than three quarters. But Attleboro ultimately fell 48-37 as the Panthers finished the game with an 11-0 run. Franklin got on the scoreboard first, but a basket by Bri LaPlume knotted the game at two. Attleboro High School came up short in a fourth-quarter comeback Tuesday at home against rival North Attleboro. The loss dropped the Bombardiers' record to 9-6. North scored first. A basket by Attleboro's Beth Clifton tied the game and a shot from behind the arc by Kim Runey and a put-back by Clifton gave Attleboro a 7-4 lead. North's Ronaghan, strong inside, brought the Rocketeers to within a point, but one of two free throws by Attleboro's Bri LaPlume gave the home team a two-point lead. The Attleboro girls win their second straight with a 41-30 victory over Mansfield.
Mansfield took an early 8-0 lead on its home court and Attleboro didn't get on the scoreboard until there was 1:18 remaining in the first quarter (a shot from behind the arc by Kim Runey). Although the game did not begin well for Attleboro on Friday, it ended just fine with the Bombardiers winning 41-30. Freshman Emily Houle followed Runey's score with a basket and the period ended with Attleboro on the short end of a 12-5 score. In the early going of the second eight-minute segment, Bri LaPlume made good on 1 of 2 from the charity stripe. Runey stood firm and took a charge, and followed up with her second 3-pointer of the night. Franklin jumped out to a 6-0 start and never relinquished the lead Friday, defeating Attleboro 64-31. In spite of Franklin getting into early foul trouble, the Bombardiers shot a dismal 7-19 from the free throw line, in the first half, and finished 16-32 from the charity stripe. Attleboro was outscored at each stop, with Franklin pouring in 24 points to the home teams 8, in the final quarter. Beth Clifton had 9 points and 6 rebounds and Bri LaPlume pulled down 8 rebounds. Attleboro now stands at 7-5 and will host Milford on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The AHS freshman defeated Franklin, 44-38. Amy Cadle led the Bombardiers with14 points. Olivia Reyes chipped in with 12 and Rose Davies, 9. The JV’s were on the short end of a 46-21 score.

The Attleboro High School girls varsity basketball team gave its best shot Tuesday night, but fell short in a 57-52 loss to Foxboro. Attleboro's Kirsten Terrien opened the scoring for the AHS team with a 3, followed by a Kerri Beland basket. Foxboro didn't get on the scoreboard until 5:31 and 2 from the free throw line by Beland and another from the floor by Kerri gave the girls in blue a 9-4 lead. Foxboro scored the next five points, tying the score until a shot by Runey from behind the arc gave Attleboro a 12-9 lead. Foxboro tied the score with a three but Beland again was fouled and was successful from the free throw line, putting Attleboro ahead, 14-12. The Bombardiers improve their record to 4-2.
Attleboro High School's girls varsity basketball team finished 2012 Thursday with a hard-fought 47-36 victory over Dartmouth. Sophomore Kerri Beland opened the scoring at 7:26 of the first quarter and the Bombardiers held a slim 10-5 lead at the end of the first eight minutes of play. By halftime, the Bombardiers had increased their lead and went to the locker room up 22-14. Dartmouth scored the first five points of the third quarter before Attleboro could get on the board. With the score knotted at 27 and 59 seconds remaining, Dartmouth took the lead and held on to finish the quarter ahead 33-29.
