The name Spencer Park is revealed at a ceremony Saturday.
In a fitting tribute, Attleboro's new dog park was officially named Saturday in honor of the golden retriever who inspired the creation of the facility. Dog park committee co-Chair Roberta Collins became visually emotional as co-Chair Raymond Cord announced the park would be named after her dog Spencer. She did not know in advance about the honor. "Without Spencer, Roberta would not have had any thoughts of building a dog park, and we wouldn't be here," said Cord to a large group of people, many accompanied by four-legged companions. A special person who has contributed time and effort toward the creation of Attleboro's new dog park on Pond Street North will be honored later today at the facility with a dedication. Dog park committee members are being tight-lipped on the honoree during a ceremony beginning at 11 a.m. "We'll just say it's a special person in the community," committee co-Chair Carol Ferraro said. David "D.J." Harding James, 55, of Carpenter Avenue in Attleboro died last month. He was 55. James was born July 11, 1957 in Haverhill to Roland "Gus" A. and Meredyth James. He attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from Haverhill High School in 1975. James worked as a clean room technician at Lucent Technologies in North Andover for more than 20 years. He lived in Attleboro for the past 12 years. James was an avid bicycle rider, enjoyed camping and driving his black Cadillac Eldorado. He also liked visiting friends at Honey Dew Donuts at County Square and was a Friend of Bill W. Dogs of various breeds run, play and have fun on the opening day of the Attleboro Dog Park.
With their leashes off, the dogs of Attleboro were free to run wild Saturday at the new Attleboro Dog Park. It was a soft opening day for the park on Pond Street North. The grand opening will take place in April. There is no schedule for the park at this time. For the latest information on when the park is open, go to www.attleborodogpark.com. The website also includes information on how to become a volunteer monitor.

The new Attleboro Dog Park on Pond Street North across the street from the animal shelter is ready for dogs today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will not be a grand opening with a ribbon cutting and political speeches; that will take place when it's warmer in April. It will be a soft opening with dogs having fun, free coffee (for the humans) and a few raffles for gift baskets and gift cards to local businesses. Volunteers start the process to create a dog park in Attleboro.
It was raining, but the people still came out Sunday to kick off the installation of the dog park on Pond Street North in Attleboro. Volunteers led by Dog Park Committee co-Chairs Roberta Collins, Carol Ferraro and Ray Cord dug 82 holes and put gravel in them. Next week, the holes will be filled with cement and poles will be placed. On the following week, a chain-link fence will be wrapped around the poles to finalize the installation. The digging process was made faster with the aid of City Councilor Jonathan Weydt, who brought his company J.W. Waterproofing's Bobcat machine. City official Barry LaCasse contributed to the effort. After years of fundraising, a dedicated group is ready to install the Attleboro dog park on Pond Street North.
Five years ago, then-Attleboro resident Roberta Collins was driving home from the dog park in Sharon with her golden retriever Spencer when a bad episode of vertigo caused by Meniere's disease kicked in. That dangerous moment far from home got her thinking. "I said to myself, 'Why doesn't Attleboro have a dog park?'" Collins recalled. She did more than wonder; Collins went into action almost immediately. She approached the City Council to request a dog park ordinance, a wish that was granted about a year later. Although the city in 2009 designated a 19,500-square-foot piece of land for the park on Pond Street North near the animal shelter, it was clear money to build the facility was not coming from the government. More than $400 is collected.
A successful bake sale took place in front of Big Lots on Saturday to raise money for the future dog park in Attleboro. More than $400 was collected at the event, said Attleboro Dog Park Committee member Carol Ferraro. Dog park enthusiasts received a huge boost recently when an anonymous party donated chain link fencing to surround the city-designated park area off Pond Street. Money is needed to pay for the posts, cement and installation. "We are hoping that once we get the posts and cement that we will have some volunteers to do a sort of 'barn raising,'" Ferraro wrote in an email to Attleboro-Seekonk Patch. The Attleboro Dog Park Committee may be one step closer to opening a dog park in the city.
The Attleboro Dog Park met tonight at 6:30 at the Attleboro Public Library. The committee was thrilled to have City Councilwoman Shannon Heagney join us for an update on our progress. The majority of tonight's meeting revolved around final arrangements for our upcoming Halloween Mutt March on October 23 at 1p.m. at Capron Park near the Park Departments office. The rain date for the event is October 30. We also discussed how well we have done in terms of fundraising through the generosity of the Attleboro Farmers Market.The Farmers Market has been very supportive in supplying space for a table for the Dog Parks fundraising efforts. The Zoo Moon brought out not only the nocturnal animals, but more than 1,000 people.
With more than 1,000 visitors, the second annual Zoo Moon was deamed a big success by its co-chair Corey Shumaker, education director of Capron Park Zoo. Shumaker and Melanie Fernandes organized appoximatly 36 vendors to be scattered through-out the zoo and a zoo crew roamed around the zoo to keep all the guests fully informed. "The zoo crew, who are student volunteers, came early to assist with the vendor set up" Shumaker said. "Then as the visitors arrived they did what they do best–teach others about the animals". The moon, however, was nowhere to be seen.
