Superintendent Candidate Predicts 'Small' Learning Curve

Anthony Azar speaks to parents and staff at Attleboro High School. The school committee is expected to appoint a superintendent next week.

If selected as Attleboro's next superintendent of schools, New Bedford administrator Anthony Azar said he would have a "small" learning curve to become accustomed with this city. "The initiatives that we work on in New Bedford are here in Attleboro," said Azar, speaking Tuesday afternoon at Attleboro High in front of a small group of parents and district staff. "I work on those day to day. That's what I do, that's my job and I enjoy it immensely." Azar, one of two finalists for the job, answered several questions from parents and staff during the one-hour session. Earlier in the day, he toured the district and met with students as well as city and school district officials. The other candidate, West Warwick Schools Superintendent Kenneth …

Superintendent Finalist Meets the Parents

Kenneth Sheehan visits the Attleboro school district.

After spending the day touring the local campuses and meeting with city and school officials as well as students, Attleboro school district superintendent finalist Kenneth Sheehan concluded his Monday tour by speaking in front of a small crowd of parents at Attleboro High's mini-auditorium. Since 2007, Sheehan has headed the school system in West Warwick, R.I. But the majority of his three decades working in education has taken place in Massachusetts. He even lived in Attleboro for three years as a newlywed. "I always had the intention of coming back to Massachusetts," Sheehan said. "I never retired from Massachusetts. I'm still vested in Massachusetts. This is where I built my house and this is where I raised my children." He added, "I …

Superintendent Candidate Anthony Azar Wants to 'Inspire' Attleboro

The Attleboro School Committee interviews the first of two finalists for the superintendent post.

Anthony Azar, school district administrator in New Bedford, answered questions Wednesday from the Attleboro School Committee in the first of two interviews of the superintendent finalists. Azar said he has worked in the education system for more than 30 years, from teacher to administrator. He is the curriculum administrator in New Bedford, and has worked in South Providence, West Greenwich and Taunton. The city of Attleboro has been giving the school district the minimum amount of funding required by the state, which creates a burden on the district to maintain level services from year to year. Azar said he would, if selected, look for other ways to keep Attleboro ahead in education. "We would look at any and all resources within the …

Public Can Question Superintendent Finalists

The candidates will be at Attleboro High School next week on Monday and Tuesday.

Attleboro School Committee interviews of the two finalists for the superintendent post will take place this week, and next week the public will get its opportunity to ask some questions. Committee Chair Mike Tyler announced Monday the candidates will introduce themselves and take questions at Attleboro High School's mini-auditorium next Monday (Kenneth Sheehan of West Warwick) and Tuesday (Anthony Azar of New Bedford) from 4:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. Residents will be asked to write their questions on index cards and school committee members will select a few to be asked to the finalists. Sheehan and Azar will spend the day in Attleboro prior to the public forums, meeting with school, city and student leaders as well as touring campuses. Their …

Bill, no argument that it would, of course, be better to have the opportunity to ask the question yourself, as I stated in my response to Kendelle. I also agree with both of you that this scheduled time is a bit early for most working parents. My suggestion to Kendelle was just an option so she could, at the least, get a response to the questions she has. I am of the opinion that the elected …   more ›
