Challenger Seeks Ward 4 School Committee Seat

Lori Scales has been a member of the Attleboro Special Education Parent Advisory Council for 10 years.

While the number of official city council candidates grows  for Attleboro's fall election, the school committee races have been slow to form. Lori Scales became just the second certified candidate this week. She is challenging Brenda Furtado, who has represented Ward 4 for two terms and was certified for the election earlier this month . Two other women have pulled papers for the Ward 4 contest, but sources say neither is expected to return them. This will likely be a two-person race. Scales responded to four basic questions from Attleboro Patch this week about her candidacy: Attleboro Patch: Why are you running? Lori Scales: As a resident of Attleboro for 22 years and a parent of two children who have gone through the Attleboro public …

As long as someone beats Craw and Furtado, it's a good thing. And I hope that deplorable individuals (Enegren) has the decency to go away as well. A trio of incompetents that need to be put out to pasture!   more ›

Furtado Qualifies for the Ballot

She is the first official candidate for any of the school committee races.

School Committee member Brenda Furtado, who represents Ward 4, was certified for the fall ballot this week after submitting her nomination papers along with at least 50 signatures from Attleboro voters. She is the first person to qualify for a school committee race. Furtado is serving her second term on the committee. Three others—Kristina Piasecki, Diane Lynch-Bartek and Lori Scales—have pulled papers for the Ward 4 contest. Political insiders say only Scales is expected to return them and challenge Furtado. "I am extremely excited and look forward to continuing to represent Ward 4 on the Attleboro School Committee," wrote Furtado in an email to Attleboro Patch. "I will continue representing the parents and community with honesty and …

Yes, it 'could'; but my wager is on either Ward Three Council, or possibly Ward Two Council. The sad thing is that there's more "ho-hum" races than lively ones. It would be a first, maybe, a school committee seat being the liveliest race in town; but that's not a bad thing, per se. Yet I predict that the ward races for school committee in Wards Three and Two (as with their ward Council races) …   more ›

Sammy Morris will be on the staff with Attleboro High School's new head coach Michael Strachan.

School Committee Finalizes Contract with New Superintendent

Kenneth Sheehan will make $175,000 per year.

The Attleboro school district's incoming superintendent and the school committee recently reached an agreement on a three-year contract. Kenneth Sheehan will make $175,000 per year, Committee Chair Mike Tyler announced Thursday night in a press release. The contract includes renewal options for fourth and fifth years, Tyler wrote. Sheehan was appointed last month to replace Pia Durkin by a 7-2 vote. The decision came a week after the school committee reached a deadlock in another meeting on an appointment of Sheehan, fellow finalist Anthony Azar or anybody at all. Sheehan is serving his final year as head of the school district in West Warwick, R.I., and will take over the Attleboro district July 1. "The school committee is confident that …

Fundraising for AHS Stadium Renovation Hits High Gear

The school must raise up to $600,000.

School district and city officials updated the city council Tuesday night on the progress of the $3 million athletic facility renovation project at Attleboro High School. Construction is set to begin June 11 after this year's graduation, and it is expected to be completed in time for the Bombardiers' first home football game in September. While the city is paying for most of the project, up to $600,000 of it will be funded through private donations and possibly grants. This money will go toward the construction of a concession stand and bathroom. The website www.ahsstadiumrenovation.com has been set up to collect donations. Also, school principal Bill Runey told the council he has applied for grants from the National Football League and …

The Attleboro School Committee honored several Attleboro High School seniors Monday night for their academic achievements and "stories of success." The recognized students were Tania Barzola Amante, Analia Cuevas-Ferreras, Keith Drucker, Ali Jenson and Bobby McCluskey. Jenson, a vocational student, is a high achiever in the culinary arts. "She's definitely going to be on Top Chef," Superintendent Pia Durkin said. "We're going to be hearing from her in a few years. All I ask is that when you have that restaurant, you put me on the top of your reservation list." Jenson said of the school's culinary program, "It's definitely boosted me up to be better than I ever thought possible. We do all kind of work together to boost each other up to push…

Attleboro High on 'Challenging Schools' List

The school is ranked 48th in Massachusetts and 1,947th in the nation

The Washington Post's recently published list of "America's Most Challenging High Schools" includes Attleboro High. The school was ranked 48th in Massachusetts and 1,947th in the nation, placing it among the top 10 percent of schools in the United States. The Post ranked schools based on a formula that took the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year divided by the number of seniors who graduated that year. "We're very proud of this," said Attleboro High principal Bill Runey in a press release issued by the school district. "Anytime that you can show that your rigor and high expectations put your school into an elite category, it …

I hate to agree with Jerry. What a stupid way to say a school is challenging. Take the number of ap tests and divide by the number of graduating students. Stupid! Any school district could make this list if all they cared about was the status. Just throw more kids into ap even if you know they are not ready for the class. Force them to take the test like Attleboro does. So what if one out of ten …   more ›
