School Committee member Brenda Furtado, who represents Ward 4, was certified for the fall ballot this week after submitting her nomination papers along with at least 50 signatures from Attleboro voters. She is the first person to qualify for a school committee race. Furtado is serving her second term on the committee. Three others—Kristina Piasecki, Diane Lynch-Bartek and Lori Scales—have pulled papers for the Ward 4 contest. Political insiders say only Scales is expected to return them and challenge Furtado. King Philip pitcher Anna O'Neill limits Attleboro to one hit in the 5-0 game.
King Philip's varsity softball team was strong on offense and pitcher Anna O'Neill was nearly perfect Monday night as the Warriors defeated Attleboro High 5-0. The Warriors struck early in the first inning with a triple by Ashley Hussion that brought in a run. The score was 3-0 by the end of the inning. KP scored another run in the fourth and its final run in the sixth. KP pitcher Ana O'Neill struck out ten batters and limited Attleboro to just one hit—a fourth-inning double by Mikayla Harnois. Sammy Morris will be on the staff with Attleboro High School's new head coach Michael Strachan.
The Attleboro High School varsity football team has someone with NFL experience joining the coaching staff for the 2013 season. The school announced former New England Patriot Sammy Morris will be an assistant coach. "I am looking forward to having coach Sam Morris on the football staff at Attleboro High School," wrote AHS athletic director Mark Houle in an email to Attleboro Patch. Morris, 36, was an NFL running back for 12 seasons, including a stint with the Patriots from 2007 to 2011. His best season was in 2008, when he rushed for 727 yards and scored seven touchdowns. Attleboro's Mackenze Mann was inducted into The Honor Society of Phil Kappa Phi.
The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi announces Mackenzie Mann of South Attleboro, was recently initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Mann is pursuing a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies at Elon University. Mann is among approximately 32,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. The Attleboro school district's incoming superintendent and the school committee recently reached an agreement on a three-year contract. Kenneth Sheehan will make $175,000 per year, Committee Chair Mike Tyler announced Thursday night in a press release. The contract includes renewal options for fourth and fifth years, Tyler wrote. Sheehan was appointed last month to replace Pia Durkin by a 7-2 vote. The decision came a week after the school committee reached a deadlock in another meeting on an appointment of Sheehan, fellow finalist Anthony Azar or anybody at all. School district and city officials updated the city council Tuesday night on the progress of the $3 million athletic facility renovation project at Attleboro High School. Construction is set to begin June 11 after this year's graduation, and it is expected to be completed in time for the Bombardiers' first home football game in September. While the city is paying for most of the project, up to $600,000 of it will be funded through private donations and possibly grants. The Attleboro School Committee honored several Attleboro High School seniors Monday night for their academic achievements and "stories of success." The recognized students were Tania Barzola Amante, Analia Cuevas-Ferreras, Keith Drucker, Ali Jenson and Bobby McCluskey. Jenson, a vocational student, is a high achiever in the culinary arts. "She's definitely going to be on Top Chef," Superintendent Pia Durkin said. "We're going to be hearing from her in a few years. All I ask is that when you have that restaurant, you put me on the top of your reservation list." The Washington Post's recently published list of "America's Most Challenging High Schools" includes Attleboro High. The school was ranked 48th in Massachusetts and 1,947th in the nation, placing it among the top 10 percent of schools in the United States. The Post ranked schools based on a formula that took the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year divided by the number of seniors who graduated that year. Jean Hickox is a veteran teacher at the school.
Jean Hickox was appointed last week as Attleboro High School's assistant principal for unified student services. Hickox, who has been working at AHS for 16 years as a teacher, has worked in the language arts department and held other positions. Superintendent Pia Durkin said she talked to Hickox three years ago and she did not seem to intonate she wanted an administrative position. "I've known Jean Hickox since I entered here," Durkin said. "She moved herself to become a dean of some very challenging students and had great relationships with kids.
