Painting an Adventure for Attleboro Kids and Adults

Attleboro's youth and adults helped to paint a fence as part of Attleboro's Big Read: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

It wasn't Aunt Polly's fence that they were painting, but kids and adults still had fun painting a wooden fence to help kick off the fifth-annual Attleboro 1ABC project, 1 Adventure, 1 Book, 1 Community at the

The Davis family of Attleboro jumped right into effort to participate in the Paint the Fence Family Day, which tied into Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, the book chosen for the annual read.

Dressed in aprons and with paint brush in hand, Kira Davis, 6, and her brother Connor Davis, 8, got right to work as mom, Jan Davis encouraged the kids. State and local officials including Congressman James McGovern and City Councilor Richard Conti joined in the fun.

The official Big Read includes a slew of artistic and cultural events that tie into the book, according to Joan Pilkington-Smyth.

The fence painting also tied into several other events Saturday afternoon including thes effort to collect non-perishable items for local pantries. Families were encouraged to barter to paint, just as the characters did in the book. Families also had a chance to play board and action games from Tom's time.
