Desperate Need at Attleboro Animal Shelter

"We are in a complete state of emergency at the shelter," said Kim Penque, a Friends of Attleboro Animal Shelter volunteer to the more than 1,000 friends on the Attleboro Pets Facebook page. "As of this morning we now have 16 dogs in the shelter and only 12 kennels plus the five in foster care!

Some dogs are sharing crates. Several volunteers spent hours at the shelter on Sunday night putting out blankets for the dogs and filling kongs to keep the animals comfortable for the night. Two other dogs were picked up last night, one of which was injured.

The shelter needs donations of food specifically, Salmon and Rice Pro Plan Dry Dog Food, according to Penque. The reason for the specific type of food is because volunteers try to keep the dogs on the same diet and consistent brand of food.

Laura Dolan said she visited the shelter Sunday after hearing that the stray dog she was trying to catch was caught by the Animal Control officer. "I was feeding her, but they caught her a couple days ago."

While there Dolan saw the shelter was over capacity.

"They asked me to foster a dog, but I couldn't because my dog is under treatment," said Dolan who has fostered dogs in the past.

"What they need is room and food," Dolan said. "They have a lot of mouths to feed."
