Warriors Victorious Under the Lights

Bailey Fernandes scores the only goal in a thriller against Old Rochester Regional

Sophomore Bailey Fernandes took a Dan Saggal corner kick in the 63rd minute and headed the ball into the net as the Seekonk High School boys varsity soccer team edged Old Rochester Regional, 1-0, in a thriller on Wednesday night.

Played in front of an enthusiastic home crowd, the game was an even match between two teams fighting for a playoff spot. The tone was set early, in furious play in front of the Seekonk net when Warriors keeper Tim Braunsdorf punched out an ORR free kick. A second free kick minutes later led to a scramble in front of Braunsdorf, but the Bulldogs couldn't take advantage.

In the 33rd minute, a 3-on-1 ORR breakaway up the left side of the field was broken up by Amiel Lopez, as the freshman continues to play a valuable role. After a scoreless first half, the Warriors challenged ORR right away, forcing the keeper to make a leaping save on senior Alex Branco's blistering shot.

A breakaway in the 49th minute by James Eline was met head-on by the keeper who left the net to challenge the junior striker. Seekonk had what seemed to be ample opportunity as Eline, Alex Branco and Braden Putney all had chances in front of the net.

After Saggal's corner kick just past the net was headed by the rangy Fernandes, the pace of the game intensified. The Bulldogs pressured the Seekonk defense, at one point having three consecutive throw-ins deep in Warrior territory. Sophomore Eugene L'Heureux, aided by the steady and dependable play of fellow defender Michael Pariseau, was a constant thorn in the Bulldogs offense. Braunsdorf challenged every shot and was key, especially as time wore down with the ball in the Seekonk end.

Head coach Jeff Creamer is pleased with the progress of Lopez, whom he calls a scoring threat with excellent ball control skills. He adds that Putney, also just a freshman who started the season on JV, has impressed the coaches with his understanding of the game and his superb passing skills.

The Warriors are home today against Coyle-Cassidy at the Cole Street Fields.
