Seekonk Boys Win Close Game at Home

Warriors, fighting for playoff position, overpower New Bedford

Two goals by junior James Eline led Seekonk to a 2-1 home victory on Friday over Greater New Bedford Regional Voke Tech. A tough Seekonk defense was key in the win.

The Warriors had many chances, starting with a soft header by sophomore Chris Platt that went just short in the first few minutes. New Bedford, mounting a dogged offense, came back upfield and were met by the steady play of juniors Michael Pariseau and Nick Smith. At one point, sophomore Matt Amaral saved a goal when the ball got behind keeper Tim Braunsdorf. Amaral headed the ball out, keeping the Bears scoreless.

The Warriors pressured New Bedford at the 30-minute mark as they had four forwards in front of the net but were unable to settle the ball to get a shot off. Junior Matt Marques finally wrestled the ball from two defenders and the keeper, getting the ball to Eline, who was able to tap it in for the first goal of the match. Senior Dan Saggal pressured the New Bedford defenders throughout the game as well.

The half ended with Seekonk holding a 1-0 lead, but New Bedford did not let up as the second half began. Forward Josh Medeiros blistered a shot that went over the top of the net. Two corner kicks by the Bears kept the action in front of Braunsdorf, but Smith and Pariseau managed to thwart the Bears.

After Seekonk's second goal by Eline, late in the second half, the Warriors let down a bit and allowed New Bedford to tap in a goal just behind Braunsdorf. Seekonk regrouped and was able to keep the ball as time ran out.

Sophomore Bailey Fernandes, who Coach Jeff Creamer said seems to get better with every game, had two chances in the second half, each time a header, but was unable to net the ball.

The Warriors have a rematch against Apponoquet today at their home field on Cole Street. The first-place Lakers defeated the Warriors 2-1 last month at Lakeville.
