Boys Soccer Victorious at Home

An offensive outburst guides Warriors to win.

The home field advantage propelled the Boys Soccer team to their first victory on Wednesday, Sept. 19, as they rolled over Wareham by a score of 6-0. The Warriors came out running, peppering Wareham with three shots as the game opened. In the 14th minute, senior Dan Saggal blistered a shot off the left post. With the help of freshman Amiel Lopez, Seekonk kept at it and Saggal netted the first score two minutes later. Senior Alex Branco went for another score moments later but was stopped by Wareham keeper Tyler Russell. Saggal scored the game's second goal at the 26-minute mark, as keeper Russell charged the ball, and was caught out of the net. Saggal easily stepped around him and tapped the ball in for his second unassisted score of the afternoon. Seekonk's offense controlled the game throughout, as junior James Eline scored goals 3 and 4, just minutes into the second half, just seconds apart. Saggal got the hat trick at the 58-minute mark, assisted by Eline, making it 5-0. Lopez capped of the scoring with his first goal around the 75-minute mark. Seekonk junior Tim Braunsdorf started the game in net and was aided by the continued strong defense of junior stopper Nick Smith and junior sweeper Mike Pariseau. The Warriors were missing sophomore Matt Amaral and juniors Jake Rossignol and Matthew Marques, all due to illness, but led by Smith and Pariseau, sophomore Eugene L'Heureux used his speed to thwart the Vikings offense. Sophomore Christopher Platt had considerable playing time and the midfielder had two nice scoring opportunities in the second half, including a header off a corner kick. Sophomore Bailey Fernandes continued his improving play too, as did junior Myles Ascolese. Junior keeper Andrew Platt entered the game in the second half, and took over where Braunsdorf had left off. Platt was tested several times and had two beautiful plays late in the game, punching Viking junior Arthur Mpofu's shot over the net, and then saving the ensuing corner kick. The Vikings were led by junior defender Wyatt Harunk, who was in the middle of Seekonk's offensive barrage, and forward Brendan Lacourse who, along with Mpofu, kept the Warriors defense on their game. GAME NOTES.....the victory followed two road losses for the Warriors. On Friday, Sept. 14, an unbeaten Apponoquet team defeated the Warriors 2-1. Seekonk held the Lakers at bay for much of the first half. Sophomore Aaron Branco put up the game's first score with an unassisted goal from the middle at the 30-minute mark, and the half ended with that score. But Apponoquet started the second half with a blistering shot by senior Matt Lizotte which easily beat Braunsdorf. The Lakers scored again in the 70th minute, off the right post, and Seekonk just couldn't tie it. On Monday the 17th, the Warriors travelled to Taunton to take on Coyle-Cassidy. The home Warriors peppered keeper Braunsdorf in the opening minutes, including a couple of corner kicks ably defended by Seekonk, led by ever dependable junior Nick Smith. In the 23rd minute, CC senior Billy Jencyowski put his team ahead and after a flurry of offensive chances by Seekonk, CC came back in the 34th minute as junior Michael Santos netted it for a 2-0 lead. Seekonk scored in the second half as junior James Eline and senior Dan Saggal brought the ball up the middle, through the CC defense, with Saggal beating keeper Conor McDonough. But it wasn't enough as the home Warriors defeated the road Warriors 3-1. There was a considerable delay in the game in the first half as CC junior Tucker Bleetle went down with an injured ankle and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Seekonk hosts Dighton-Rehoboth on Friday, Sept. 21.
