Boys Soccer Battles to a Scoreless Tie

The Warriors bounce back from a Bourne thrashing last month

The wind was whipping, the field was slippery and the Warriors faced a very tough opponent in a game at Bourne on Wednesday. Bourne had easily beaten Seekonk at home last month, and sit in second place in the conference. But the Warriors came out battling and showed the Canalmen they would not be pushovers, in a hard fought game that ended in in a scoreless tie.

The game was not without its chances for both teams. Junior Matt Marques, who played an outstanding game on both sides of the pitch, brought the ball the length of the field as play got underway, only to have the play broken up with possession reverting to Bourne. Seekonk couldn't clear the ball and junior Tim Braunsdorf made his first save, sliding on his knees.

The Warriors had decent shots by senior Dan Saggal, whose first corner kick was headed wide left by junior James Eline. Junior Nick Smith's shot from midfield then went wide left, and the Canalmen once again brought the ball downfield, forcing Braunsdorf to dive to his left to stop the goal. Seekonk showed better ball control in the midfield than in earlier games, with Marques leading the way.

As the second half opened, Bourne again challenged the goal as its striker Jack Canterbury went in alone but was stopped by Braunsdorf. Play continued in front of the net until junior Michael Pariseau was able to clear the ball. Pariseau would rise to the occasion again at about the 61st minute when the ball got behind Braunsdorf and Pariseau just tipped it away with his right foot, saving a goal.

As time waned, Eline and Saggal again were front and center, as was sophomore Aaron Branco. The Canalmen, led by nine seniors to the Warriors three, kept the pressure on the Seekonk defense until Smith made a key stop at midfield and got the ball to to his offense. Play was frenzied as the clock wound down, with the game ending 0-0.
