VIDEO: Warrior Baseball Playoff Bound

First year skipper Joe Demelo's team is headed to the postseason this year, but is looking to finish strong for pride and to improve seeding.

Ryan Corry had a good afternoon for Seekonk against Old Rochester Regional on Wednesday. The lefty struck out five Bulldogs, going the full seven innings and allowing only one run.

“I felt pretty good,” said Corry, whose control was vastly improved from recent starts. “The past few games I’ve been hitting my spots more and more,” the lanky left-hander added.

If after Corry finished the sixth inning his manager had any doubt about letting his starter finish the job, Corry was able to settle the matter with his bat. Seekonk was nursing a one run lead in the middle of the sixth when Corry knocked in two insurance runs to salt the game away.

In a game that had a little bit of everything, Seekonk was able to escape with their ninth win of the season. Curiosities from this contest included a Bulldog being called out for missing a base and a Warrior forfeiting an at bat to batter interference.

Unconventional methods of winning however, are not prohibited by the MIAA, and Seekonk has won enough games for a trip to the second season.

The offense is essentially proceeding according to plan this season. From the two spot through the six hole, Seekonk is hitting .345. Led by Andrew Killian and Dylon Swift, the heart of the order is doing its job this season.

On the pitching side, things are good. Braden George and Corry continue to turn in quality starts. When it comes time to shut the door, Matt Foley is equal to the task. Foley’s 1.71 earned run average leads the team in that category.

“Obviously we’re playing good ball, 9-5 and we’re headed to the tournament,” said Corry after Wednesday’s win. So is Seekonk ready to cruise until the tournament?

“No. The approach doesn’t change. I’d still like to get at least ten wins, which would pretty much guarantee us a home game,” said manager Joe Demelo of his team’s clinching a playoff spot.
