VIDEO: Seekonk Majorettes Twirl Up a Storm at Library

For the first time in their history, Seekonk Majorettes held a demonstration at the Seekonk Public Library to generate more interest in their group.

Seekonk Majorettes may not be your typical youth sport, but it works the way other programs in town do. The organization provides an opportunity for girls from grades four through 12 to learn to twirl. The program works as a feeder for high school Majorettes, in the same fashion as football or baseball.

"It's huge. The girls come in not knowing very much and hey learn. If they started in high school, they wouldn't be as talented." said coach Ashley Ewing-Chow.

The majorettes group started in the 70's as a supplement to the band. At the time, it was only a high school organization, for the twirlers we are accustomed to seeing at football games and marching with the band in parades.

"Over the years the age got younger and younger and the categories we could compete in expanded," said Kelly Everett, the group's advisor.

There are now a total of four group categories in which the girls in the program compete. In addition, some of the girls have branched out to compete individually this year.

On Monday, members of the team put on a display at Seekonk Public Library in hopes of encouraging others to learn to twirl. They showed some of their moves, taught youngsters some of those moves, and discussed the commitment majorettes requires.

The season roughly mirrors the school year. Majorettes starts a few weeks after school does in September. Competition takes place from January through March. Although the competition season is "over" in March, there are still parades and other events for which the majorettes must prepare.

The group is open to fourth graders all the way up through high schoolers and encourages interested parties to join. If you're interested in Seekonk Majorettes, email Kelly Everett at Kellyann_e@comcast.net.
