Summer is Over for Attleboro High School Athletes [VIDEO]

The Attleboro High School Football team started practice this week and the team is hoping to improve on last season's 8-3 record.

While their friends may be relaxing at the beach and trying to enjoy the last weeks of summer vacation before returning to school, the football is already back to work practicing for the upcoming season.

However, the idea that the team has had the summer to relax isn’t necessarily true, according to quarterback Chris Walsh.

“We haven’t had the summer off," Walsh said. "The whole team’s been working."

“The amount of effort that the kids have been putting in the off-season training will hopefully make it all come together for them,” Head Coach Kevin Deschenes said.

Right now the pre-season practices are just starting up, so the focus is on the basics such as learning assignments and formations for the new players as well as general conditioning drills.

“A lot of running,” said JJ Jolaoso of the practices so far.

While the newest players are still getting acclimated to things, much of the team has been through this before and knows the drill.

“We’re already in routine," Walsh said. "We had a lot of captain’s practices so everyone already knows the deal."

While the practices do focus on the conditioning and football related skills, it is also a time for the team to get to know one another, bond and build chemistry as they sweat out the summer training camps together.

“It’s a new season, it’s a new team, it’s a new chemistry," Deschenes said. "Every team I’ve coached has had its own chemistry. These kids will develop theirs."

The team has high expectations for itself, hoping to improve on last season’s 8-3 finish and reach the Superbowl.

Walsh pointed to the season opener against Bishop Feehan as a big game for the team, but neither he nor the rest of the team are trying to look too far ahead or put too much stock in one game.

“Our motto this year is that every game is our biggest game,” Jolaoso said.
