Bishop Feehan, Attleboro High Tie in Hard-Hitting Hockey Game

Bishop Feehan came back from three goals down to tie the Bombardiers in the season opener for both teams.

The Bishop Feehan High School hockey team stormed back from three goals down to tie their crosstown rivals, the Attleboro High Bombardiers, 4-4 in a feisty, hard hitting, and often scrappy game, at Aleixo Arena Wednesday. Senior captain Nick Carvalho scored with only 5:09 left on the clock to earn both teams a point in their opening games of the season.

Shamrocks coach Phil Hulbig was disappointed with how the team fell behind, but satisfied with the team’s fight to get back into the game.

“Power play wasn’t getting the job done early and we had some opportunities and then Attleboro comes down the ice and, you know, they make you pay for those little mistakes," Hulbig said. "The kids didn’t quit. They came out in the third period fired up and hopefully it’s a little confidence boost for us.”

Attleboro built a 4-1 lead early in the third period behind junior forward Zach Dragun’s second goal of the game but, as has been the case for several seasons, penalties proved to be their undoing. The Bombardiers had 10 penalties as a team and, with defenders Evan Caldwell and Travis Tanguay in the box, Feehan capitalized on the 2-man advantage. Carvalho started the comeback with his first goal of the game followed two minutes later by the second goal from junior Max Johnson, setting up a frantic finish.

For Attleboro coach Mike Cripps, the penalties and short bench were what wore his team down in the final period.

“We kind of ran out of gas," Cripps said. "We’re trying to depend on the top two lines and the conditioning just isn’t there yet.”

Coach Cripps was impressed by the first varsity start of his sophomore goalie Andrew Campion.

“He’s only been back a few days because he had a concussion the first week and a half," he said. "Not bad for a sophomore for his varsity start.”

Bishop Feehan will hope to keep the momentum of the third period going when they take the ice next on Monday against Durfee. The Bombardiers will also return to the ice on Monday against Taunton. Both games will be at Aleixo Arena.
