Seekonk Junior Warriors Ready for Football [VIDEO]

With conditioning week behind them, the Junior Warriors are suited up and ready to learn playbooks and techniques for the new season.

Seekonk Junior Warriors players are up and running for another season and camp is already in its second week. Players from second through eighth grade have a chance to play football against teams from surrounding towns throughout the fall.

For years, youth football and the Pop Warner program have been synonymous with each other. But here in Seekonk, American Youth Football governs play, which means one major difference.

"The difference is, we don't have an age-weight scale," says Jim Lamoureux, the Football Coordinator for Seekonk Junior Warriors. "In Pop Warner, if you're a big kid, you can never play football until you get to high school."

The more lenient standards in AYF have allowed more youngsters in Seekonk to play, and also allows children from neighboring towns who have failed to make weight for Pop Warner to participate.

"We are getting a few kids from Dighton, Rehoboth, Somerset and Swansea," says Lamoureux, who also coaches the seventh grade team.

In lieu of an age scale, players are simply placed on a team based on their grade in school. The second and third grades share a team, as do the fourth and fifth. Sixth, seventh and eighth grade each have their own teams.

The Junior Warrior teams at each level will play an eight game regular season, followed by playoffs. Stay tuned to Patch for announcements about game times and venues.
