Seekonk Junior Golf League Open for Registration

Formed in 2002 with the help of the Seekonk Lions Club and Seekonk Parks and Recreation Committee, SGGL is looking for members.

The Seekonk Junior Golf League (SJGL) is now accepting players of all ability, according to a press release issued by the organization.

The league was founded by Dan Preston in 2002 with support from local businesses including the Seekonk Lions Club, and the Seekonk Recreation Committee. Over 90 players are registered.

Today, the SJG  is a tax exempt, non-profit organization that allows boys and girls, ages 10 to 16, the opportunity to play golf and receive golf instruction at a low cost during an eight-week period over the summer, according to the press release. The league is open not just to Seekonk residents, but prospective golfers from the surrounding communities.  Special financial consideration is available to those experiencing financial hardship.

The SJGL provides a safe and positive environment for those learning to play the game of golf with their peers. The players are organized into teams, sponsored by local businesses, competing for the rights to the “Carner Cup," named after local golf legend and LPGA Hall of Famer, Joanne Carner, reads the release. While the league’s home course is located at Rehoboth's Hillside Country Club, other locations throughout the Southern Massachusetts and Eastern Rhode Island are utilized.

The league, starting its ninth season, will play clinics held July 5; opening day is  scheduled for July 9. The season will run every Saturday throughout the summer with play concluding the August 28. Registration for the 2011 season is open now through June 15th on the league’s Web site.
