Seekonk Field Hockey Field to be Named for the Late Karen Stone

Karen Stone, who was the girls' field hockey coach at Seekonk High School, with be honored posthumously with a field bearing her name.

Last November, beloved Seekonk High School physical education teacher Karen Stone passed away at her home in Seekonk. She endured an eight-month battle with cancer.

It was immediately apparent that her students, past and present, would not allow her to be forgotten.

At athletic events in the subsequent months, fans and athletes could be seen sporting T-shirts with phrases and remembrances on them. Throughout their 2010-2011 season, the boys' basketball team wore warmup T-Shirts adorned with the number 1, the surname on their "jerseys" was "K Stone."

A massive dodgeball tournament was held in her memory in the immediate aftermath of her passing. More than 200 people were in and out of the Seekonk High School gym that evening back in late November.

This year, the senior class asked that the field hockey field be named for Stone. In her career at Seekonk High School, Stone was the girls' field hockey coach and served for a brief time as the school's athletic director.

"The senior class made the request and is paying for the plaque," said Principal Marcia McGovern in an email on Wednesday. Although no date has been set, there will be a dedication ceremony for the field in the future.

One of Stone's closest colleagues at Seekonk reflected on the decision and on Stone's memory. "I believe there were several faculty members suggesting naming the field hockey field in her name," said fellow physical education teacher Gary Miller. "She was always willing to go the extra mile for the kids. We all miss her exuberant smile and approachability."
