Seekonk Beats Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech 30-7 on Friday Homecoming

Matt Lockwood scores four touchdowns as Seekonk wins convincingly and celebrates homecoming.

Christie Mendes and Mike Luti of the freshmen class, sophomores Ruby Wong and Kong Trong, and the Class of 2012's Molly Rowland and Tyler Eddy were named Princes and Princesses of the homecoming court Friday. Elliot Gault and Ashley Lopes were named King and Queen.

With all of those titles taken, Matt Lockwood could have been the emperor or sultan on the football field.

The Warriors took to the football field where they hosted Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech (NBVT) Friday. Seekonk's thunder and lightening backfield was a little heavy on the thunder as Lockwood scored four touchdowns in the game, but Justin Carvalho (lightening) did his fair share of rushing.

"Lockwood was a bear," said Seekonk Head Coach Jack Whalen. "He was the guy we knew we had all year."

Lockwood ran for a total of 137 yards on 18 carries, taking the majority of the load with his teammate suffering from the flu.

"[Justin] Carvalho didn't practice until Wednesday," said Whalen.  "He was still a little sluggish so we limited his carries a little bit.  But when we gave it to him he ran well."  Carvalho certainly did run well. He got only 10 carries but amassed 118 yards, including a huge run of 71 yards to set up the first touchdown by Lockwood.

Despite losing the possession battle (11:53 for NBVT and 8:07 for Seekonk) in the first half, Seekonk scored the Lockwood touchdown early in the second quarter and was in position to score again in the final seconds of the half. But quarterback Jake Lyman was pushed out of bounds at the two yard line on fourth and goal. At half, the score would remain 6-0 Seekonk.

Receiving the second half kickoff, the Warriors committed four penalties on their opening drive, usually a complete killer for Seekonk's wing-T offense. But with big runs from Carvalho and Lockwood, the Warriors kept the drive going for nearly seven minutes and Lockwood punched it in for his second score. Carvalho added a two point conversion as he outran the defense to the left pylon.

Up 14-0, Seekonk forced a quick punt by NBVT but immediately fumbled the ball back to the Bears.  On the ensuing drive, the Seekonk defense started making big plays. Michael Braunsdorf, who had been in the enemy backfield all night, blocked a pass early in the final stanza.  Moments later, Andrew Killian picked off NBVT quarterback Drew Frenette and returned it deep into Bear's territory.

Lockwood immediately ran the ball in from 23 yards after the Killian interception. This score, along with a two point conversion by Lockwood, made it 22-0 Seekonk and took virtually all doubt out of the result.

Seekonk kicked it away after the score and NBVT went on their lone scoring drive. Frenette threw two deep passes for a total of 65 yards.  The second was a 40 yard bomb which Ryan Boswell caught in the endzone.  The Bears converted the kick to make it 22-7 and looked to recover an onside kick to remain in the game.

Seekonk's hands team took to the field and Jack Kane recovered the onside attempt at the 50. The Warriors chewed up those 50 yards, helped by a personal foul for a late hit by the Bears. The drive finished with Lockwood's final touchdown and Carvalho's second two point conversion.

That score made it 30-7, which is where the game would finish.  Seekonk celebrated their homecoming win, the fifth of their season, bringing them to 5-2. The Warriors now looks forward to Wareham next week.

"We have a tough game against Wareham next week," said Whalen. "They always play us tough.  They're big and they're physical.  We're looking forward to it."
