Recreation Department Hosts Clinic to Rouse Rugby Interest

On Saturday, the Seekonk Parks and Recreation Department and Providence Youth Rugby will host a free clinic at the Dr. Kevin M. Hurley Middle School.

Seekonk doesn't have much of a rugby presence. But after this Saturday's tutorial hosted by Providence Youth Rugby members, young athletes may be up-and-coming ballcarriers yet.

According to Bridget Garrity, director of the Seekonk Parks and Recreation Department, a free rugby clinic will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the on Saturday, Oct. 22. Children in grades kindergarten through eighth grade are invited to attend team games, the first clinic of its kind in Seekonk.

"Currently, the town does not have a rugby presence yet, but we're hoping to change that with this clinic," Garrity said.

After the clinic, the Providence men's team, affiliated with the Rhode Island Rugby Football Association, will play against a Burlington team at 1 p.m.

According to Garrity, the men's team has used Seekonk's field for years. They asked recreation committee members to host the clinic and game on Saturday.
