Quick Start Leads Oliver Ames Girls' Soccer Past Attleboro

Two quick goals by Allie Brennan and Kendall Andrew lead Tigers to a 4-1 victory Wednesday afternoon at Muscato Stadium.

Although it wasn’t anything like the 9-0 final the first time these two teams met, the Oliver Ames girls’ soccer team dictated the tempo early en route to a 4-1 victory over Wednesday afternoon at Muscato Stadium.

OA improves to 7-2 on the year and 7-1 in the Hockomock League, while Attleboro, which had five players out of the lineup due to injuries, dropped to 1-8 (1-7 Hock).

Thanks to two quick goals from junior midfielders Allie Brennan and Kendall Andrew – both via a corner kick from senior tri-captain Mallory Fisher – just 28 seconds apart, OA quickly gained momentum, which helped them use its depth to its advantage.

“I thought we came out on fire,” said OA coach Britt Sellmayer, who is now two wins away from 300 in his 18-year coaching career. “I thought it was a good game for us. I was able to rest some players and dressed 23 girls and a lot of players got to play some significant time. It also gave us a chance to evaluate some of the young talent too.”

OA could have easily blown the game early in the first half. But thanks to sophomore goalkeeper Elizabeth Clifton, Attleboro, despite mustering very few offensive chances, trailed by just two at the half.

Much of that, despite the injuries and the win-loss record, can be attributed to Attleboro’s improvement from the last meeting.

“Attleboro was much improved from the last time we played them,” Sellmayer said. “They made it more difficult for us to score. I thought they played us tough.”

The slow start, however, cost Attleboro in the long run.

“I thought we came out really flat in the beginning,” Attleboro coach Steve Santos said. “Those two corner’s really did a number on us and took us out of the game early. Britt has a good team. They’re really aggressive and they have some size and good set pieces, especially with corners.

“I thought we fought hard and they just touched the ball really well,” Santos added. “It was a little better than the first time we played them. We came in knowing that they were a good team and we tried our best and we fought hard. I am really proud of my girls on that part.”

After an assist in the first half, Emily Grotz added a tally of her own just 2:53 into the second half, when her shot snuck past Clifton on the goal-line.

Grotz’s performance caught the eye of Sellmayer.

“She was just a force up and down the sideline,” he said. “She had an assist in the first two minutes and she was crossing but it found a way in the net. She deserved it, she’s had a half-dozen assists this year and she’s been doing a lot of good work for us.”

Senior tri-captain Kristina Simonson added a tally of her own later in the second half, while midfielder Amanda Ferzucko scored Attleboro's lone goal. Both markers came in the 70th minute.

OA (at North Attleboro) and Attleboro (at Canton) hit the road for inter-division matchups on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
