Locals Enjoy Sandlot Baseball

Twenty-two young people come out for informal hardball at Poncin-Hewitt.

There was a great crowd of kids this past week for sandlot baseball at the . There were 22 in total, three of them girls, so a thanks goes out to all who continue to promote the program. If every attendee brings one more person with them next week, we will hit my goal of needing to use fields two and three at the same time.

If other more emergent police duties do not get in the way, we are hoping to have  at the upcoming session. He asked if he could bring his glove and play catcher, which I think is great. Maybe once Officer Miller sees how easy it is to get this program going, he could offer it occasionally at for children from the East side who cannot get to Poncin.

Quote of the week:

One player looked at me at the end of the session and said, "We never kept score. This was awesome!"

Quote of the week two:

After the girls made several nice defensive plays in a row wearing pink gloves: "Pink is the new gold!"

Sandlot baseball is free and open to everybody throughout July on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thanks to all who support the program and please keep spreading the word!

""we are hoping to have DARE officer Robert Miller at the upcoming session. He asked if he could bring his glove and play catcher, which I think is great."" I thought this was about the kids playing with no adult interference.

Mr. Scott: Thank you for providing the opportunity to clarify this point. Because the focus of the program is to let the kids play baseball, instead of waiting for catchers to put on gear, the position of catcher is not played by any children. The risk of a foul ball striking a catcher without protective equipment is too great so the players are provided a 5 gallon bucket of baseballs and the pitcher covers home on defensive plays. At the switching of teams, the kids re-fill the bucket. Having Officer Miller participate would be an extension of his efforts to connect with the children of our community and have a positive influence. Please feel free to come by any Thursday to observe. 10:00AM to noon! Duff White
