Bishop Feehan Girls' Hoop Team Steamrolls Martha's Vineyard

Bishop Feehan cruised to victory over Martha's Vineyard, 72-36.

If there was any fear that the Bishop Feehan girls' basketball team  might not have the legs they needed after their epic overtime loss to Archbishop Williams on Tuesday or that they would be looking ahead to next Tuesday's crucial's clash with Coyle-Cassidy, they were dismissed within the first eight minutes as Feehan dominated Martha's Vineyard on their way to a 72-36 win Friday night at home.

The Lady Shamrocks (5-2,1-0) led after one quarter, 29-7, and at the half 39-16 despite their starters sitting the final five minutes of the second quarter. Feehan broke open a 9-5 game with a 15-0 run and followed that up with a back-breaking 11-0 run in the second quarter.

Shamrocks star guard Lexi Sells finished with eight points and fouled out with a minute to go in the third quarter but it didn't matter as junior Sierra Schrader had her captain's back scoring 24 points (13 in the third quarter alone) and pulling down 12 rebounds.

Feehan head coach Mike Deady was amazed by Schrader's overall game.

"She's added a little something this year, if she gets the open look she can bury the three-pointer," said the coach. "What she did well tonight was she rebounded and played real tough inside. She did a great job."

Martha's Vineyard coach Lisa Stewart was impressed by the way her team battled all the way to the end against the Shamrocks pressure.

"We haven't seen anybody this physical and fast yet," she said. "It's good for us, we'll be fine."

Junior forward Maggie Riseborough led all Vineyard scorers with 20 points, including 10-12 from the free throw line, and 10 rebounds.

One of the oft overlooked aspects of the Shamrocks start to the season is the backcourt of senior captain Marissa Cicchetti and junior Cara Adams. Cicchetti (eight-points), who missed most of last season with a knee injury, knocked down two huge shots from beyond the arc in the midst of the Shamrocks' first quarter run and Adams (10 points) controlled the game while playing with the reserves, including one fantastic wrap around pass in the post.

Deady was happy to recognize the contributions of the duo.

"Marissa hit some big shots in the first half, she does a great job of getting our kids in the right place," he said. "Cara Adams is a very underrated and very talented player. Did you see that pass- awesome pass. We're going to need all these kids to play."

Bishop Feehan will continue with conference play on Tuesday night in a showdown with Coyle & Cassidy, while Martha's Vineyard (4-2, 0-1) will have another ferry ride to take as they visit Somerset.
