Bombardiers Late Goal Stings Hornets

AHS Girls Soccer host Mansfield

It was senior night at Attleboro High School as the Bombardiers girls soccer team faced off against the Mansfield Hornets.

For the seniors, it would be their last home game ever.  They made sure it was one to remember, scoring with less than five minutes left in the contest and winning 1-0.

During the first half of play, both teams fought hard.  There was a lot of action and the intensity level was high.  The possession was even as neither team took control of the game.

Mansfield's game plan was very simple. Once they had the ball, the forwards would make a run as the ball was chipped up to them. The Bombardiers had a few scoring chances, but couldn't put one in the back of the net, as the game was scoreless going into the half.

Mansfield kicked it up a notch in the second half.  They controlled the action, having possession of the ball for at least 70 percent of the half.  The Hornets stuck to their game plan of playing through balls.  Mansfield played the ball up the wing quite a bit and had their players deliver crosses into the penalty box.  Despite controlling the action, the Hornets didn't muster many scoring chances, or shots on goal.  The Bombardiers continued to fight hard and were marking tight.

Coming into the game, Mansfield was in second place in the Hockomock League.  However, Attleboro set out to prove they can play against any team in the league.  Thanks to some late game fireworks, they pulled off an improbable win.

With only four minutes left in the game, freshman Brianna Laplume dribbled down the right hand sideline and cut the ball inside.  She delivered a great ball, putting it right in front of the net.  Sophomore Erin Woodhead took it from there, drilling it into the back of the net, giving AHS a 1-0 lead.  Mansfield had a great scoring chance late in the game, but Kayla Comer's shot sailed over the net and the Bombardiers won 1-0.

"The game was pretty even back and forth," AHS coach Steve Rodrigues said. "We finally put one in."

After today's match, AHS improves to 2-7-5 and the Hornets drop to 7-4-4.  Both teams have a few games left on the schedule.
