Attleboro Bombardier Girls Defeated by Mansfield Hornets

The Bombardier girls basketball team lost against Mansfield in the Hockomock League game.

There were few surprises in Attleboro Friday night as the continued their dominance in the Hockomock League with an impressive showing against the Attleboro Blue Bombardiers.

Though Attleboro never gave up, in the end the lead that Mansfield established early was just too high for the Blue Bombardiers to overcome. Mansfield opened strong and never looked back, winning by a final score of 56 to 43 to remain undefeated for the season.

The key to the victory was Mansfield’s defensive play in the first half, particularly the second quarter.  After leading the first quarter 21 to 9, Mansfield held the Blue Bombardiers to just five points in the second.

“Our defense was good to start but got great in the second quarter,” Mansfield Coach Mike Redding said.

By the end of the half, Mansfield had increased their lead to 24 points.

But Attleboro has nothing of to be ashamed.

Behind 38 to 14 at halftime, the Blue Bombardiers showed a lot of resolve by coming out strong to start the second half.  By the end of the third quarter, Attleboro had doubled their first half point total from 14 to 28.  Sophomore Guard Brianna Hockwarter had an exceptional game, hitting three three-pointers and leading all players on the court with 16 points.

Offensively for Mansfield it was definitely a team effort, with nine different players scoring points.

“We’re lucky because we can depend on a lot of girls to score five or six points every night, and that makes us very hard to defend against,” Redding said.

Junior Forward Colleen Copley and Senior Guard Kelli McPherson each scored ten points to lead the team.

“We built up enough out a lead to get the younger kids in,” Redding said.  "All of whom had a lot to contribute.  We’re a very unselfish team.”

The subs were also able to give the starters a lot of rest, which should prove very beneficial come Sunday night when the Hornets travel to North Attleboro to face the Rocketeers.
