Who's Your Favorite Teacher? United Regional Chamber Wants to Know

The United Regional Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for its Teacher of the Year award.

The United Regional Chamber of Commerce, which serves 16 communities including Attleboro, Mansfield and Seekonk, is seeking 2011 Teacher of the Year nominations.

The Chamber is asking for nominations for its Teacher of the Year award, which honors an outstanding teacher in one of the Chamber's 16 communities, including Attleboro, Bellingham, Blackstone, Foxborough, Franklin, Mansfield, Medway, Millis, Norfolk, Norton, North Attleborough, Plainville, Rehoboth, Seekonk and Wrentham.

"Local teachers are nominated by their peers, students and the parents of some of those students because they have been a positive influence in the lives of many of our young people as well as the other educators that they work side by side with on a daily basis," Chamber President Jack Lank said.

And that's not all. The chamber is also asking for scholarship applications from students in the same 16 communities.

The chamber scholarships are for the sons and daughters of a United Regional Chamber of Commerce member businesses. Students must be a high-school senior who has applied to a four-year accredited college, have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher and performed voluntary community service.

The scholarships came from the estate of Jacqueline C. Stack, a somewhat local celebrity who passed away in 1992. "In her estate she donated to the Chamber of Commerce an impressive sum of money to be used specifically to support the Chamber Scholarship Program," Lank said. "Three $1,000 scholarships will be granted this year to the natural or adopted children of members of the Chamber, including employees of member companies."

The three $1,000 scholarships will be distributed through the Chamber's Jacqueline C. Stack Scholarship Program, two $500 Metalor Technologies scholarships, one $500 Attleboro Supervisors' and Foremen's Club scholarships and one $500 National College Assistance Services scholarship.

Scholarship recipients and the 2011 Teacher of the Year will be recognized at a celebratory breakfast.

The deadline for scholarship applications and teacher nominations is April 15.
