VIDEO: Fathers' Reading Week Makes a Literary Splash

The George R. Martin Elementary School hosted a parade of fathers armed with books and reading voices throughout the week.

Throughout the week, the was barraged by visitors of all different kinds of professions and backgrounds. But they all had one thing in common: they were a father of a student and wanted to read aloud to a classroom full of their peers.

Friday was the conclusion to "Fathers' Reading Week," honoring paternal involvement in the school. According to volunteers who manage the reading segments, the event is a nice addition to the typical curriculum. Not only are students excited to show off their fathers, but the parents feel welcome in a volunteer environment still mainly dominated by women.

"I think it's still harder for some men to take time off from their jobs. It's sometimes easier for mothers," said one volunteer.

To welcome the family members, a table dressed up with balloons and a friendly sign was stationed at the school's entrance all week. Parents of the elementary school students manned the area to welcome the fathers and take them to each delegated classroom.

"Are you sure you know where you're going?" he asked while walking down the color-blocked floors.

"Oh, yes," she laughed, as she walked him into teacher Shanna Vachon's fifth-grade classroom.

Blume decided to read "Treasure Island" to the students sitting in their desks. His daughter sat next to him as he read about badly behaved pirates undertaking sea-adventures.

According to Vachon, the visitors are the highlight of her students' week.

"They're ecscatic. They come up to me and say, 'My dad's coming in to read today,'" she said in her brightly decorated classroom. "They're so excited."
