Students Earn Money for High AP Scores

More than 70 percent of Attleboro High students who take Advanced Placement exams receive a score of 3 or higher.

Checks were handed out at Attleboro High School on Friday to students for their accomplishments on recently taken Advanced Placement exams. As part of the MMSI program, in which AHS is participating for the fourth year, students who scored a 3 or higher on AP exams in math, science and English received $100 checks.

Attleboro High principal Bill Runey said there were 80 qualifying scores in math as well as 81 in science and 80 in English. Fifty-five students achieved qualifying scores in history and psychology, although no money was awarded for those accomplishments.

"Seventy-one percent of our AHS students who took an AP test scored a 3 or above, which is remarkable considering the size of our AP program and how inclusive we are," Runey wrote in an email. "If you have a hunger for excellence, you can take AP classes at AHS."

He continued, "Attleboro's success in this program has taken our school into a higher MMSI bracket. The downside is that our students will no longer get financial rewards for qualifying scores, but you cannot put a price on the culture shift that has taken place. We have students who were given an opportunity to be challenged and to excel, and their dedicated teachers have motivated them to achieve."
