Seekonk Schools Celebrate Town's Bicentennial

A series of events take place this week to honor 200 years of Seekonk.

Seekonk Public Schools will be in the bicentennial spirit this week with a series of events to honor the town's 200th anniversary. Most of the events are free.

The festivities begin tonight (Monday) at . At 6 p.m., there will be a ceremony featuring the Seaconke Wampanoag Tribe, descendants of Annawon's Tribe—the original inhabitants of Olde Seaconke. This will be followed by a concert at 6:30 p.m. in the school gym that will feature the school's eighth-grade band and Hurley Middle School Idol Taylor Roy. Also, Bill Harley will perform an original piece written for the town's bicentennial celebration.

From 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., there will be a presentation of Seekonk's official 200th anniversary video in the cafeteria as well as a public display of student work in the classrooms.

The celebration will continue Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. at  with a display of student artwork from both elementary schools inside and just outside the gym. Also, grade-level presentations will be displayed throughout the school.

A performance will take place at 7 p.m. that will include a presentation of "200 Reasons Why Seekonk is the Best." In addition, the elementary schools' fifth-grade band will perform music from the era of the town's founding.

Events on Wednesday will take place at . A ceremonial fire and storytelling will take place at 4:30 p.m. This will be followed by a macaroni dinner and screening of Seekonk’s 200th anniversary video. The dinner costs $5 ($4 for Golden Pass holders and $3 for children).

Classroom tours and exhibits of student work will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. The festivities will move into the auditorium at 7:15 p.m. for the 200th Anniversary Concert featuring the High School Symphonic Band.

The evening will conclude with an 8 p.m. coffee and a sampling of international desserts in the foyer outside the auditorium.
